From the Course

Rainfall for the week – 19mm

Rainfall for 2025 – 264.0 mm

Dam – 90%

Green speed – 10 feet

Last weekend’s predicted high rainfall didn’t eventuate which was fortunate as the new practice green didn’t need to be smashed again, and covering it with the tarps as we had planned wouldn’t have been ideal for the health of the seed either.

The small amount of rain we did receive on Tuesday morning was ideal as we were able to fertilise all collars, aprons, and bunker surrounds with the rainfall washing most of this fertiliser into the turf canopy. This application will give these surfaces a kick of growth just before the upcoming greens renovations, where they will be aerated while the greens are being aerated, and they will also receive some extra fertiliser when we fertilise the greens. This should send the collars and aprons in the winter months in the best possible condition.

Growth regulator applications to fairways and roughs have continued this week in and around our mowing schedule. The product manufacturers recommend that the turf being treated shouldn’t be cut 6 hours before or after the application. This week the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 13th, 14th, and 17th holes were completed. These applications will help the course team keep playing surfaces to the expected standards, with the weekly mowing of rough not enough to keep all areas under control due to the high humidity and rainfall we have been experiencing recently.

The new practice green is responding to the fertiliser applications and growing well. It received its first roll with a walk behind mower this week which has given it a striped appearance. The rolling with this walk behind mower will be repeated several times before the first actual mowing is performed, as we need to ensure the surface is firm enough so that the front roller of the mower won’t dig into the surface.

The 19th green will be seeded early next week with the gravel in the bunkers being sealed with the polymer coating over the weekend. Once the seeding is completed, the turf will be ordered to cover all the surrounds. This will then leave the surrounds of the new ponds, head wall around the pipe feeding the ponds, and the surrounds of the new pathway to complete.

Our volunteers were on course Monday morning performing a bunker run in front of the competition players, drainage pit clearing and trimming continued, fairway sprinkler heads on the back 7 were trimmed, fly traps were brought in from the course, electrical work in the Proshop was completed, and sorting out of the storage areas in the clubhouse started. Roses were trimmed and fairway divotting was also performed. Thank you to everyone that offered their time to the Club this week!

Greens will be cut on Saturday and Sunday morning. Garry will be setting pins on Saturday, with Caleb stepping up on Sunday morning.

Happy Golfing!

Pennant Update

Men’s Major Pennant

The Major Pennant team played the last match of the regular season today, taking on a fired up Manly side at Manly GC who were keen to get some revenge after last week’s result. The host team showed the same confidence and course knowledge as we did the previous week, taking us down 6.5-0.5 in the team’s first loss of the year.
Today’s result definitely doesn’t define the great season the team has had which sees us go into the semi final next Sunday against Bonnie Doon at Cabramatta where a win would see us promoted to Division 1 for 2026 but more importantly give us a chance to win the Club’s first Major Pennant flag.

The team picked to play the Semi Final at Cabramatta is below:

  1. Young Park
  2. Wil Reece
  3. Grant Lomas (c)
  4. Nathan Wareham
  5. Luke Mason
  6. Christian Fong
  7. Charlie Kim

Mixed Pennant

Our Mixed Pennant Team played in the Semi Final at Monash last Sunday. The Coast’s team was filled with low handicappers and were the 2023 winners. Well, to cut a long story short, it all came down to the final putt on the 18th green in the final match. The Coast’s female player sunk a 20 foot birdie putt to win. They now play Moore Park in the Final next Sunday at Ryde Parramatta. The Oatlands team had a great season but may take a while to recover from the disappointment of going so close, but falling just short. Well done though to The Coast and well done to Oatlands for a great year. And thank you to all the members and staff for their support and encouragement throughout the season, especially Judy Williams who travelled all over Sydney to show her support.

Results below:
Debbie Jepson & Vish Tandon Won 2/1
Justa Kim & Lindsay Macinnes Lost 5/3
Stephanie Monaghan & Peter Crawford Lost 1 Down
Michelle Kelly & Denis Ledwidge Lost 4/3
Lizzie Sorbara & Tony Monaghan Won 7/6

Ladies Grade Pennant

The ladies Grade Pennant Team played at Concord today against Manly and unfortunately went down in a close contest 3 matches to 2. They play next Friday at The Lakes against Monash.

Ladies Bronze II
Our Ladies Bronze II Team played against Ryde Parramatta GC today at Pymble and were able to win the day with a 3 matches against 2. Their next match will be played at Ryde Parramatta with our ladies taking on Pennant Hills GC.

Captain’s Corner – Update on Stroke Events and Scoring

Dear Members,

As many of you will know, Oatlands has long since moved away from the historical Golf Club structure where Wednesday and Saturday competitions were exclusively for male members. Female members, provided they are in the appropriate membership category, have for a long time now been welcome to participate in these competitions and compete for the daily prize.

However, a discrepancy has existed in the results due to the difference in course par:  ie: a par 70 for male members and a par 73 for female members.

This disparity has led to variations in nett scores between male and female participants. For instance, if a male member plays one under his handicap, he records a net score of 69, while a female member playing two under her handicap will record a net score of 71.

To address this and ensure fairness, we are making an adjustment to the scoring system in the next stroke competition round. Going forward, results will be recorded based on scores against the applicable course par, rather than the raw number. In the example above, the female member would now be placed ahead of the male member, which more accurately reflects their performance relative to the course par.

We believe this adjustment creates a more equitable playing field, as the competition results will be recorded in line with the way handicaps are calculated. We trust this change will encourage greater participation from our female members in these competitions.

Thank you for your understanding and support!

Club Captain
