From the Course
Rainfall for the Week: 1.9mm, Rainfall for 2025: 154.0mm, Dam: 95%, Green Speed: 9.5feet
A great effort by the team on the course this week with a lot of extra work required outside of our usual maintenance requirements involving the project work on the practice fairway green and 19th holes.
Greens were dusted on Monday afternoon, and a thorough check of moisture levels using the probes was performed on Wednesday morning in preparation for several warm days that were being predicted to end out the week. The scared areas on the 3rd and 6th greens are recovering after seaweed based products were applied last week.
The application of growth regulator to fairways and roughs was finally completed on Monday, with the green surrounds sprayed with growth regulator on Tuesday morning to control the growth on these areas and reduce scalping from the mowers. Members may have noticed some green dye on the soles of their shoes after these applications. This is just a green pigment added to the tank mix to disguise some slight yellowing of the turf surfaces that follows the regulation applications. This pigment is harmless and will either wash off or fade very quickly from your shoes.
The practice green area is nearing completion with the bunkers having the gravel drainage or base lining set with a polymer product that sets the gravel like concrete, but allows the water to move through and down to the drainage lines beneath. Once this polymer had set after 24 hours, we were able to spray the seed onto the putting surface area. This was a team effort as the hose used to spray the seed couldn’t be dragged across the dimple holes created across the surface. We are waiting on a delivery of new grow cloth which is late coming up from Melbourne, but as soon as it arrives we will cover the seed to protect it.
Keeping adequate moisture available for the new seedlings is vital during these initial weeks of germination. Therefore, the sprinklers on this green will be coming on hourly for short lengths of time throughout the day. The turfing of the surrounds of this green (Santa Ana couch) will be performed on Monday morning, with the bunker surrounds (Sir Grange Zoysia) completed on Tuesday morning.
The course team and our contractors have been busy preparing the foundations of the new concrete path down at the 19th tee, with form work installed on Thursday, and concrete being laid on Saturday morning. Wet weather is predicted for Sunday and Monday, and this could make the 19th green site too wet for the concrete trucks to access the new path area, hence why it will be done on Saturday morning. We ask for some patience when required as the trucks enter and exit the course via the track between the 7th and 8th holes.
Our volunteers were on course Monday morning checking and cleaning the practice nets, tidying up the 6th creek and around Farmer Tunks Hut area, edging concrete paths, and tidying up the nature strip outside the 12th hole and the memorial garden area. David Osbourne was back divotting fairways on Thursday morning, and Mike Cuming continues to keep the roses in great condition. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers that contribute so much to the maintenance and upkeep of the course and Club!
Greens will be cut and rolled on Saturday, and then cut again on Sunday morning.
Happy Golfing!
The Course Team.
Ralph Cadman shoots his age – AGAIN!!!
There are many milestones and achievements in golf that are particularly memorable, and a lot of these, many of us can only dream of.
Breaking the various scoring barriers (100,90, 80, and even 70), playing to a handicap for the first time, scoring more than 40 points, and of course the elusive hole in one.
One of the more remarkable and rare scoring achievements in golf is to play 18-holes in a score that is equal to or lower than your age, and to do this even once reflects a remarkable combination of ability and endurance, so to achieve the feat on more than one occasion is special indeed. And this is exactly what long-time OGC member Ralph Cadman did on Wednesday 5th February, recording 82 shots (41pts on a 17 handicap), a few months shy of his 84th birthday.
This feat is all the more remarkable as it is the third time that Ralph has bettered his age.
Well done Ralph, may there be many scores like this ahead!
Webex Player Series Sydney @ Castle Hill CC
There has been a wonderful resurgence in Professional Tournament golf in Australia in recent years including the newly formed Webex Players Series. The Webex Series is one of the the world’s most innovative golf tournament series, combining men’s and women’s tournaments, competing for the one purse. It provides a wonderful opportunity for Juniors and all-abilities athletes to play alongside and connect and learn from Tour Professionals.
From February 20 to 23, Castle Hill Country Club will be hosting a leg of the Webex Series and have extended an invitation for our members to attend the event free-of-charge on any of the days.
This event is a pathway for Australia’s next generation of men and women professional golfers in their quest to make it on the bigger stage of world golf, and spectators will be treated to some incredible golf.
This event is free-of-charge and all members are welcome to attend any of the days.
Practice Fairway Green – GUR Drop Zones and Restricted Access
The upgrade works to the Practice Fairway Green have progressed to the stage of seeding the green which will occur next week. Once the seeding takes place, the green will become a restricted area as foot traffic has the potential to cause depressions in the surface which can no longer be smoothed once seed has been spread.
As such, Drop Zones will be placed in two areas adjacent to this green, one on the 13th hole side and one on the 17th hole side, as areas for GUR relief to be taken if a ball enters this area. Information on the specifics of the GUR rules in this area will be communicated via the Local Rules Board at the 1st and 12th tees, and is subject to change as the status of this area progresses. All golfers are encouraged to check the Local Rule Board prior to play, which should be standard practice for all golfers.
Unfortunately, for a period of time, golf balls will not be able to be retrieved from this area to ensure the grow in of the turf is uninterrupted.

Pennant Update
Men’s Major Pennant
Our Men’s Major Pennant team started their 2025 campaign on Sunday (2nd Feb) at home at Oatlands against Bankstown GC with a 4 matches to 3 victory. We got 2 matches in early with some large margin wins on the 13th hole by Luke & Grant and with Brad Hooper who had a last minute call up from the reserve position to play at number 7 recording a 3&1 win, Oatlands just needed one final point to ensure the victory. Current Club Champion Nathan Wareham was the man for the job fighting back from being 4 down through 6 holes to win his match 2&1 with a birdie on the 17th.
This weekend will see the return leg against Bankstown at Bankstown (starting at 7am, Sunday 9/2), with the following players representing OGC:
- Young Park
- Wil Reece
- Grant Lomas (c)
- Nathan Wareham
- Luke Mason
- Christian Fong
- Charlie Kim
Res. Ian Priest
Members are encouraged to get along to the Club and see our best male golfers represent the Club in the Major Pennant competition.
Mixed Pennant
Our Mixed Pennant team played against Camden at Macquarie Links on Sunday. Camden are a very strong team who played in the final last year. Oatlands had it all to play for though after a very narrow loss in their last match. The team did a fantastic job winning 4.5 – 0.5 to go to the top of the group.
Results:
- Debbie Jepson & Dileen De Silva – Won 6/5
- Stephanie Monaghan & Pete Crawford – Won 1 Up
- Justa Kim & Lindsay Macinnes – Won 6/4
- Michelle Kelly & Denis Ledwidge – All Square
- Lizzie Sorbara & Tony Monaghan – Won 1 Up
We now need to win our last match against Macquarie Links at Rosnay in 2 weeks’ time at 12:00pm on 16/2. This Sunday (9/2) Oatlands have a bye as we play host to Macquarie Links v Massey Park and Rosnay v Camden.
