From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 7.5mm,  Rainfall for 2024: 1,106.5mm, Dam: 80%,  Green Speed: 9.5feet

With the warm weekend followed by an exceptionally hot start to the week, the main concern on Monday was to manage the moisture levels in the greens. The goal was to ensure that there was enough moisture in the soil for the plants to access during the heat of the coming days. Proper moisture levels are crucial to prevent the plants from experiencing too much stress, especially under hot weather conditions. Ensuring adequate hydration helps the grass maintain its health and resilience during periods of high temperatures, reducing the likelihood of injury so that the plant doesn’t become susceptible to attack from disease. All greens were thoroughly probed with our moisture meters to ensure levels were above our threshold, and this meant the greens came through unscathed.

The Southerly buster on Tuesday afternoon/night brought the cool change and milder weather, but it also meant the course was littered with leaf and bark debris once again. The course team has blown this debris from fairway surfaces and will have the vacuum working on Thursday and Friday to collect as much of this material as possible.

We do have some scaring on the 1st and 17th greens which has resulted from a recent herbicide application to our bunkers. To control weeds that were starting to develop on the high faces of the bunkers, we applied a herbicide that not only controlled the weeds, but also contained a pre-emergent herbicide that would stop them re-germinating for several months. We’ve found that when the sand has been thrown out onto the putting surfaces through play, the pre-emergent component of this herbicide has been hazardous to the turf on the collars and greens. These areas will be plugged and returfed in the new year.

Turf is being laid on the new 19th tee on Friday which is ideal timing with most of our suppliers closing down for the Christmas and New Year period. Final preparations were competed by course staff and the contractors on Thursday, with the irrigation installation completed, laser levelling of the tee pads, and final shaping of the tee surrounds in readiness for the new turf. The contractors will then continue working on the practice green site with the sub-base shaping ready by Monday. Gravel for the drainage of the putting green surface will start to be delivered on Monday 6th January when the quarries re-open.

Our volunteers were on course Monday morning trimming all fairway sprinkler heads, trimming the 6th tee hedges, tidying up the 6th creek, trimming under the guard rail along Bettington Rd, mulching around the memorial garden and rose garden, and picking up the fallen parts of the tree near the 6th green. This was the last Monday for the volunteers this year, so they celebrated with a festive lunch together and they all received a small token of the Club’s appreciation for all the hours that they contribute over the year. Thank you gentlemen for another great year with many things accomplished every week. Have a great Christmas and New Year and get some practice in before our Annual Golf Day in January!

Greens will be cut on Saturday and Sunday morning.

The course team wish all our members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Happy Golfing!

The Course Team.

Last Enews for 2024 – Changes Coming in 2025

This will be the last Enews publication for 2024, with the weekly publication returning Friday 10th of January 2025.

Commencing in January 2025, the weekly Enews will be translated into Korean, and a separate link will be added to the Enews email (as pictured below) for access to the Korean translation.

Approximately 25-30% of our membership are of Korean heritage. For many of these members, English is not their first language.

This initiative is being implemented to assist the broadest possible cross-section of members to engage with all aspects of their membership at Oatlands, and to ensure the majority of Club communication reaches as many members of the Club as possible.

We trust this addition to the Club’s regular communication will be received positively and welcome any feedback on the content and quality of the translation once the initiative commences on 10th of January 2025.
