From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 0.0mm,  Rainfall for 2024: 935.5mm, Dam: 100%,  Green Speed: Renovations

Mother Nature was at her destructive best this week with high winds last Friday sending the course into the weekend in a very messy condition. The winds returned on Monday with several very powerful gusts bringing down several large branches, covering fairways and filling bunkers with debris.

The blowers spent the entire day on Tuesday clearing debris from the fairways so they could be cut back down to our summer height of 13mm. We raise the height of cut during the winter months when growth stalls to combat wear that these surfaces receive from the high number of rounds on the course. We only raise the height by 2mm, but it makes such a difference to the health of the turf. The overall coverage on the fairways after winter is the best it has been for quite some time, with the recently completed aeration and the fertilising which has commenced this week, only enhances the coverage and the quality of the fairways.

Residual insecticide and pre-emergent herbicide for Wintergrass and broadleaf weeds is also being applied in conjunction with the fertiliser. These applications were delayed until Wednesday morning because of the high winds and the amount of debris strewn across the fairways. These applications will be performed early mornings to avoid interference to play. Sprinklers will be operating to wash the products into the soil, with the irrigation also timed to finish ahead of play.

The cutting height on greens will be back to 3mm for the weekend which is our usual all year round cutting height. This will increase the speed of the greens, with rolling of the greens to be performed more regularly which will firm up putting surfaces and further increase the speed of the greens.

Volunteers were on course Monday morning performing a bunker run before the competition, clearing foliage from behind the cart shed to resolve a drainage issue, clearing drainage pits, gurney concrete pathways, and performing clubhouse maintenance tasks. Another very productive morning for which the course team and I are incredibly grateful. The work around the back of the cart shed looks fantastic!

Greens will be mown both mornings this weekend.

Happy Golfing!
The Course Team.

Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day – 10th September

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), in conjunction with other global superintendent groups, is recognizing those who are essential to golf’s success with an international “Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day,” encouraging all golfers, those who are in the golf business or anyone who benefits from the game, to thank superintendents for their hard work and dedication to the game.

“Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day” 2024 will be celebrated on Sept. 10.

In addition to GCSAA, other groups taking part in the global event include the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA), the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association (CGSA) and The Federation of European Golf Greenkeepers Associations (FEGGA). All together the groups represent more than 31,000 golf course management professionals in 78 countries around the world.

In advance of Thank a Golf Course Superintendent’s Day, we would like to say thank you to our own Superintendent, Dom Yates.

Maintaining a golf course is a complex and thankless task, and OGC is well served by one of the most dedicated, talented and hard-working Superintendents in the industry.

Thanks for all you do for the OGC members Dom.

Council work on Bettington Road / 10th Hole

Members may have noticed a construction fence on the Bettington Road boundary of the 10th hole adjacent to the beginning of the fairway (see photo inset).

The work in this area is being conducted by City of Parramatta Council to upgrade the Gross Pollutant Trap (GPT) that filters rubbish and debris from stormwater runoff from Bettington Road.

While these upgrades works are being undertaken by Council, the construction fence will be deemed as Out of Bounds.

Golfers who hit a ball in this direction are encouraged to play a provisional.
