Ricky Fang Triumph at NSW Combined Independent Schools Championship
Oatlands Golf Club is proud to announce that one of our talented junior members, Ricky Fang, has won the NSW Combined Independent Schools Sport Championship held at Belmont Golf Club on Monday, June 17th.
Ricky, a 12-year-old golfer with a handicap of 6, shot an impressive round of 74 (+2). What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the challenging conditions under which the event was played. Battling through 50 km/h winds and tackling the demanding Men’s Blue tees, Ricky’s performance was nothing short of phenomenal. He won by a staggering 8 shots!
This victory has earnt Ricky a spot in the NSWPSSA Golf Championship to be held in September at the Hunter Valley.
We are incredibly proud of Ricky and his accomplishments and look forward to watching his success in the future.
Good Golfing!

Junior Development Programme – Australian Sports Foundation
The rapid growth of our Junior Development and High Performance Programmes in recent years, under the guidance of Jeremy Ward, will be extremely beneficial for the strength of the Cub’s membership long into the future, however, it also has increasing costs to deliver in keeping up with the growing demand.
This is why the Club has registered the Junior Development and High Performance Programmes with the Australian Sports Foundation which allows for fundraising to occur, with all donations being tax deductible.
Donations toward the programmes will be used for the activities below: (this is not an extensive list)
- Increased JDP clinics (we currently offer 9 clinics a week during school terms)
- Specialised school holiday coaching programmes
- Private coaching for High Performance Squad members
- Engagement with third party sports professionals, such as; golf specific exercise specialists, physiotherapists, nutritionists, etc
- Tournament entry and travel costs for JDP and HPS members and coaches
The continued growth of our Junior Development and High Performance Programmes also allows us to resist our elite talent being poached by other Golf Clubs, (an unfortunate and all too regular scenario in the golf industry), and to retain our exceptional PGA professionals who implement the programmes.
As such, the Club is calling for donations to support the growth of our programmes through the Australian Sports Foundation with tax deductible donations possible via the website below:

Yenda Lee – 90th Birthday Celebration
The Oatlands ladies got together on Monday 17th June to celebrate Yenda Lee’s 90th birthday.
Yenda has made a huge contribution to Oatlands over many years, particularly through Bing Lee’s sponsorship of the Ladies NSW Open from 2006 to 2015.
Around 80 members were on hand to celebrate the occasion and toast Yenda for her 90th birthday.
Happy Birthday Yenda!
WE Tunks Father & Son Trophy / Parent & Child Trophy – Advanced Bookings Available
The Club’s annual WE Tunks Father & Son Trophy and Parent & Child Trophy is scheduled for Sunday 7th July.
This 4BBB event is open to all Father / Son and Parent / Child pairs with each pairing requiring one member (invitation event).
To encourage participation, the Club would like to offer all eligible pairings the opportunity to book for this event prior to the timesheet opening at 4:30pm on Saturday 29th June.
To make an advanced booking, please email Sam Howe on gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au prior to the timesheet opening with your preferred tee time and playing partners if applicable.
W E Tunks Father & Son Trophy was donated by Bill “Farmer” Tunks who joined in 1939 and became an institution at Oatlands. Apart from his many exploits, it shouldn’t be forgotten that Bill was a mean golfer winning the Club Championship in 1953. When Bill junior won the first of his three Championships in 1962, they became the only Father Son Champions. It is appropriate that they were the first winners of this trophy in 1979.
The 2023 Father & Son Trophy was won by Tony and George Jasser with a 4BBB score of 50 points.
The 2023 Parent & Child Trophy was won by Linda and William Bestford with a 4BBB score of 41 points.

Pennant Update
Men’s Interclub
The Men’s Interclub side have progressed to the Interclub Challenge final with another walkover victory as a result of wet weather washing out last weeks Semi-final. While this is not the way the side had hoped to progress to the final, strong result in the division fixtures meant their higher seeding was the determining factor in who progressed, with Bonnie Doon Golf Club unfortunately missing out.
The final will take place on Sunday (23rd June) at The Australian Golf Club vs The Australian Golf Club at 11:30am.
Good luck to a side who are in the final for the second consecutive year and looking to go one better than the runner up finish of 2023!
Men’s Master Pennant
Sunday’s game (16th June) was a tough match in very difficult conditions and with a couple of our stronger players missing.
Well done to the Bayview greens staff who transformed a golf course that was completely under water 2 days earlier to allow the fixture to be played and produce a result.
Charlie Kim played almost perfect golf again against an opponent who also played at a really high standard and was previously undefeated. Their game was very competitive and played in great spirit. They made 6 birdies between them.
Wins to Peter Crawford on the last hole, and to Peter Zann with a great up and down on the 17th to win his match and remain undefeated were also highlights.
Great efforts by Mike McKechnie, who played despite having the flu and no voice, and also to Simon Perry for stepping in at short notice.
This season has been tough with our worst loss being 5 to 3 and plenty of drawn matches.
Team Results
- Charlie Kim Won 4&3
- Rod Butcher Lost 9&7
- Stephen Doherty Lost 4&3
- Dave Osborne Lost 5&3
- Mike McKechnie Lost 4&3
- Peter Zann Won 2&1 (Undefeated)
- Simon Perry Lost 3&2
- Peter Crawford Won 2up
On Sunday, we play the leaders Twin Creeks at Oatlands and we will require a strong win to avoid having to play a relegation playoff match.
Regards Rod Butcher
