Men’s Club Championship
Week one of the Men’s Club Championship Matchplay finals took place on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October. It was fantastic to get two days of clear weather and the atmosphere before and during play was filled with tension and excitement.
The Championship Grade was played on Sunday over 36-hole matches and as predicted, the majority of matches went the way of the higher seed, setting up for an intriguing set of quarter-finals to be played on Sunday 23rd October. And while OGC is blessed with some exceptional young talent on the back of our successful Junior Development Programme, it is the experienced campaigners who make up the majority of the remaining contenders.
- Last years runner-up, Luke Mason will take on major pennant team mate Nathan Wareham in the first quarter-final after both won their first matches comfortably.
- Roger Nakaad and Grant Lomas won their first matches 13/11 and 11/9 respectively and will face off in the next quarter-final.
- Rowan Easterbrook accounted for up and coming Sam Reece 7/6 and will take on Budd Frome who defeated Peter Schliebs in one of the matches of the round requiring a 37th hole to produce a winner.
- The last quarter-final will see Charlie Kim take on the back to back champion of the last two years, Brad Hooper, after both had comfortable wins in the first round. Both competitors will be expecting a stiffer challenge in their quarter-finals.
- The Plate Championship, played on Saturday 15th October, saw a mix of exciting finishes, comfortable victories, and impressive comebacks, with four of the eight matches finishing on the 18th hole. Quarter-finals for this grade will take place on Saturday 22nd October.
- Peter Crawford defeated Peter Zann 1up and will face Gilbert Im in the quarter-final who also won his match against Simon Perry on the last hole.
- Craig Millen had a comfortable victory 6/5 and will face Leigh Sheppard who chipped in for a birdie on the 18th hole to defeat Rodney Butcher 1up.
- Kane Milne was 4 down in his match before rallying to defeat Simon Ruxton on the last hole and will take on the experienced Jack Chun in the next round after Jack defeated Steve Bestford 4/3.
- The final match of The Plate quarter-finals will see Brent Smith take on Jimmy Hawach after both had comfortable wins over their first round opponents.
The Middle Markers was the most closely contested first round with 6 of 8 matches going to the 18th hole or beyond and the other two matches going to the 16th and 17th holes.
Phil Camden overcame an early deficit to defeat Chris Baddock 1up and will now take on Andy Sohn who also won his match 1up against Aaron Coutts.
- Laith Barnouti needed an extra hole to defeat Mark Clout and will now face Rod Bowyer who was pushed to the last hole by Michael Carlin.
- Club Captain Colin McRae overcome the Directors curse to defeat Eugene Conlon on the 20th hole and will now face up and coming Christian Fong who overcame a resilient Matthew Troy 2/1.
- Another talent on the rise, Nicholas Radburn was too good for Mike Brown 4/3 and will now face Ben Mees who got the better of fellow Director and Club President George Isaac on the 18th hole.
- This puts our two remaining directors up against the two young-guns in the division and should see them available to assist with refereeing duties next week (sorry Col, Ben, I have to call it as I see it 😊).
The Long Markers saw Murray Forrest lift the trophy for the 14th time ….. apologies, copy and paste error (I got in trouble last week and am doubling down)
- Scott Whittaker defeated Richard Granger who couldn’t overcome the early start to his round 2/1, and will face Corey Fernandez who defeated Young Shin with relative ease.
- Jason Noh defeated one of the Club’s brightest talents Jeremy Liew, and will now face Jerry Maher who defeated Max Bestford. Max needed an early finish to his match to make the Everest Race Day at Randwick. Max, we hope your success at the track was better than that on the course.
- Jonathon Bell overcame pre-game nerves to record a comfortable win over Jay Lee and will now face Dale Brimicombe who was assisted (insert verb of your choice) by experienced buggy handler David Gaffaney to a 3/2 victory over Thiam Ang.
- The quarter-final match will see Vice-Captain and Greens Chairman Bill Mitchell take on Jason Kim after they accounted for Larry Woldenberg (4/2) and Tekin Chok (1up) respectively.
Club Championships Match Play Draw 2022
Ladies Club Championship
The 2022 Ladies Club Championships continued on Thursday with the second of two qualifying rounds for the matchplay finals in 3 divisions.
Our ladies had to battle intermittent, and at times, persistent rain to determine the 8 matchplay qualifiers in each grade. Just over 60 ladies completed both rounds and should be commended given the conditions experienced.
Below are a list of qualifiers, and while there is a clear number one qualifier in each grade, many a golf commentator has said over the years, “you don’t win the event in the first rounds, you win it in the last round” and so to all the ladies who have qualified and are in with a chance in their respective grades, best of luck in the upcoming matches!

From the Course
Rainfall for the Week: 4.5mm, Rainfall for 2022: 1,910.0mm Dam: 100% Green Speed: 10 feet
There have been many compliments about the course this week which has been great to hear after having to deal with wet conditions for the best part of 8 months. Mother Nature is again a big contributor to these improved playing conditions, with the course being very lucky to miss up to 50mm of rain that coastal locations received on Monday. The renovation works that the course team perform on greens and fairways, was the groundwork for the improved conditions we are now experiencing.
The appearance and firmness of greens has improved with the weather allowing these surfaces to dry out to a safe level under mild cloudy weather conditions which doesn’t place any stress on the turf. The dusting of the greens which the team is performing every week will also assist with the firmness and a true roll of the ball on the putting surfaces.
Turf for the 13th bunker surrounds is being delivered and laid on Friday, with staff spending the week ensuring that these areas are ready for what will be a very busy day with 8 pallets or 400m2 of turf being laid around these 3 bunker surrounds. The 1st bunker surrounds will follow in the next week or two, with some minor surface preparations required before they are ready for turfing.
Winter grass weeds that were sprayed in the roughs a fortnight ago are starting to yellow out and die. All tee complexes, collars and aprons were sprayed this week to control Couch Mite is these areas. Couch Mite isn’t a destructive pest of couch, but it is slowing the transition of these areas as they come out of winter dormancy. This spray application will be backed up in a fortnight’s time to really gain control of this pest’s populations, as they are very fast reproducers.
All areas of the course have been mown again this week. Growth on fairways isn’t at a stage where growth regulation is required. Once the temperatures are consistently around the high 20’s and into the 30’s, I anticipate we will then have to start growth regulator applications to be able to keep the fairways under control.
Our volunteers were on course Monday morning back under the guidance of their regular leader David Gaffaney, having recovered from a recent hip replacement. I’d like to thank Matt Hartland for stepping up and leading the volunteers in David’s absence over the last couple of weeks. This week, a bunker run was completed for the daily competition, practice nets cleaned and repaired, fairway sprinkler heads trimmed (only missing a few), tree suckers trimmed, and tidying up overgrowth on Greens Ave nature strip. Thank you gentlemen for another very productive and entertaining morning!
Have a great weekend!

Sub-Surface Sampling – Monday 24/10 thru Thursday 27/10
Members are advised that a drilling rig will be on-site next week to sample locations all over the main car park, overflow car park areas, 12th hole (green/fairway/tees), and around the 18th green. Sections of the car park will be blocked off on different days to speed up the process (this will be managed to minimise disruption), and the 12th hole will be closed on Wednesday to allow the samples to be taken while the car park is full because of the members comp.
PGA Expo / Jeremy Ward spends a day with Cam Smith’s Coach
Hello Members,
Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the PGA Expo in Melbourne followed by a day with Cam Smiths coach, Grant Field at Pelican Waters, Queensland.
The PGA Expo:
The PGA Expo is a two-day golf business event with speakers from around the world discussing golfing trends, ideas, coaching philosophies and is a great way for me to connect with PGA Professionals from around the country.
One of the key speakers was Rick Sessinghaus. Rick is the long-time coach of Colin Morikawa. Rick has been coaching Colin since the age of 8. Rick discussed the mindset principles for peak performance. He called it Fear vs Flow….. So what does this mean?
Ask yourself the question, are you constantly playing in fear? Fear of making a “wipe”, fear of hitting it in the trees, or fear of missing that 2-foot putt in front of your mates?
If I ask myself this question, the honest answer is yes. So how do I overcome this? I need to get in the “Flow Mindset”…. Easy right😊.
Members, next time you see me please come and ask about achieving the Flow Mindset. It’s a great concept and a conversation I’d love to have with you.
My day with Grant Field:
After the PGA Expo, I flew to Queensland where I spent the day with Grant Field. Grant is the long-time coach of world number 2, Cameron Smith.
One of the best days I’ve had on a golf course, and I didn’t even play. I learnt so much in such a short period of time.
The idea is for me to watch and learn. Grant had a full day of coaching a Junior Elite squad.
We discussed all things coaching including specific detail into Cameron Smiths short game.
Of course, I couldn’t help but ask about what it’s like coaching on the LIV Golf tour.
A huge thank you to Grant and his family for welcoming me into their world.
Good Golfing!
