From the Course
Rainfall for the Week: 5.0mm, Rainfall for 2022: 1,673.5mm Dam: 100% Green Speed: 9 feet
The team, with the help of our volunteers, has started to install a product called Geohex over the worn track on the right hand side of the 16th flyover. This area was worn away from constant cart traffic, with the wet weather turning this track to mud and being slippery to walk on. The Geohex is a plastic material which is laid down in 1m2 panels over a prepared solid base. We are filling the hexagon shaped holes with 20mm road base which will provide a much better path surface all year round. This work won’t be completed this week, as the team must finish installing lateral drainage lines to solve the extremely muddy area which forms when we receive rain.
An irrigation leak behind the 9th green has been dug up and repaired this week. The water to our irrigation system must be turned off to allow water to drain from the lines so specialised glue can be used to connect the repair couplings together. This also means that the course toilet block must be turned off as it is on the same water meter. The leak has been repaired so the course toilets will be back in use as of Friday (today).
Members will have noticed that a pump has been running beside the 13th pond all week. This is so we can reduce the water level down as we are planning to repaint the wall during the spring renovations course closure. Our volunteers are going to tackle this job, firstly cleaning the wall with a gurney, before painting the wall in a dark green colour.
Course staff had discovered several holes that had formed in the 4th fairway approximately 5-10 metres in front of the green. The team has dug these holes up and found that the concrete stormwater pipe beneath the surface has broken in several places. This was most likely from verti-draining our fairways over the years, as this pipe is relatively shallow beneath the surface. New drainage pits have been installed above the bigger holes in this pipe, with the smaller holes covered over with drainage cloth to stop the soil from washing away through the exposed holes.
All greens have been scarified this week to remove thatch from these playing surfaces. The 4th and practice greens have been verti-drained and topdressed on Thursday to ensure all the equipment is ready for next week. All greens will be cored (removing a 19mm plug from the profile) and cleaned up on Monday, with topdressing and rubbing in of the sand into the core holes to be started on Monday and completed into Tuesday. Wednesday will see amendments and fertiliser applied to all greens. As well as greens, all fairways are being aerated, topdressed and fertilised. The process on fairways takes 2 weeks to complete, as we cover approximately 10 ha’s, using 300 tonnes of sand to topdress all fairways. A busy 2 weeks for the team ahead.
Our Volunteers were on course Monday morning helping with the installation of the Geohex path, cleaning range mats and preparing for tasks that will be performed during renovations. Thanks gents for your assistance this week, and looking forward to seeing you all next week!
Enjoy the weekend!

Biannual Course Renovation – 15th – 17th August inclusive
Members are advised that the Club’s biannual Course Renovation is scheduled for Monday 15th August – Wednesday 17th August inclusive.
With the extreme weather of the last 5-6 months, it has never been more important to undertake a full course renovation. This renovation is, to a degree, reliant on suitable weather conditions, and as such there is a possibility the intended schedule may be extended at short notice to ensure a full renovation is possible. The renovation in Autumn was comprised by weather, and given the stress the golf course has been under, it is vitally important the upcoming renovation is completed in full.
All Club facilities (including Clubhouse, Admin, Pro Shop, Practice Facilities) will be closed during the renovation.
Ladies Interclub with Concord GC – Friday 5th August
24 OGC Ladies travelled to Concord GC last Friday for an Interclub match against the host Club.
As is often the way in these Interclub matches, the home Club proved difficult to overcome and despite our ladies best effort, the Concord ladies had a narrow victory 476pts to 472 pts. Da Lee and Dahee Lee won the 4BBB with terrific score of 49pts.
Rakes in Bunkers
Following communication on this topic in July, there remains a significant increase in the number of rakes left in the bunkers with the handle outside the bunker, as shown in the photograph below.
It is Oatlands policy that rakes must be left in the base of the bunker with the rake pointing in the direction of the hole, as shown in the photo.
Can we please ask all members to comply with this policy and advise other members who may not be aware of this requirement.
Regards,
Colin McRae
Club Captain
