Paint & Sip – Saturday 28th May 2022
Clubhouse Manager and resident Arts and Crafts expert, Karah Chapman, will be hosting the Club’s next installment of Paint & Sip on Saturday 28th May.
Enjoy a fun and creative night with 3 hours of painting, arrival cocktail, and grazing table.
This popular event has limited space available and will fill quickly, so get in early to avoid disappointment.
The images below the poster are from the 2021 Paint & Sip event.
From the Course
Rainfall for the Week: 4.5mm, Rainfall for 2022: 1,272.0 Dam: 100% Green Speed: 9.5 feet
As I mentioned in my course update video for the members Facebook page, the course was really set back last week with the rainfall it received. The ground was already saturated before this rain fell. The days have been perfect autumn weather days with plenty of sun but no real heat or wind, therefore any rain that falls has a double or triple effect on our fairways and roughs and forces swift calls to be made regarding cancelling carts and course closures.
The team continued to work on our bunker rejuvenation program with the installation of fabric lining, drainage, and sand in the back left bunker on the 11th, and the completion of sand installation in the right hand side bunker on this hole. We have also installed drainage and bidim cloth in the front left bunker, with the bunker mat to be installed across all the faces of this bunker next week. Maintenance work has also been performed in the front right bunker on the 1st hole, with drainage lines exposed and backfilled with new sand which should see this bunker drain quicker naturally after any rainfall.
Fairway aerating was started this week which will provide some much needed air and relief to our saturated fairway surfaces. This aeration will also help these areas to dry just that little bit quicker when favourable weather conditions are presented. The 1st, 4th, 7th, 16th, and 17th fairways were completed this week, with some wheel damage occurring to the 4th fairway in isolated areas. The 4th fairway is currently our wettest fairway due to the flat topography at the top of this fairway which means the water has nowhere to runoff naturally, and the heavily shaded left hand side of this fairway which doesn’t see any sunlight for most of the day.
The 5th fairway has been difficult to mow in recent weeks, but we have managed to lower the height of cut on our Ventrac rough mower and cut the entire 5th fairway. The Ventrac is specifically designed with a light footprint which makes it an ideal piece of equipment to have during this extended wet weather period.
By Friday afternoon, the team will have completed a full mow of all roughs which had to have a delayed start from Tuesday as the course was too wet on Monday. Fairways and greens surrounds have all been cut through the week, so the course is in as good condition as it could be, considering the weather conditions.
Our volunteers were on the course Monday morning completing path edging, trimming the hedges at the 6th tee, clubhouse maintenance and lifting and levelling sprinkler heads on the 15th fairway. Plenty of banter amongst the group this week, as always, but even more so this week after the fearless leader of our volunteers had a slight mishap with an MGI buggy whilst caddying for the major pennants team last Sunday!
Thank you, gentlemen, for a productive and entertaining morning!
Have a good weekend,
The Course Team.

Caption Competition – Win a Second Hand MGI Navigator*
Members who have read the Course Report and Major Pennant Update, or who are part of the Club’s Monday volunteer brigade, will have an insight into what is is occurring in the photo below, but in summary; while caddying for Grant Lomas in the Major Pennant Semi-Final on Sunday 15th May at Campbelltown, Grant’s caddy, Mr. David Gaffaney, sat on the remote control of the Navigator buggy he was using, which efficiently navigated itself between the rocks adjacent to the creek and disappeared into the water below.
Things could have been worse for Grant and David, as Grant regained his composure to win the match, and also showed equally great composure when advising the Club’s General Manager (the owner of said buggy) what had occurred to his Navigator later that evening!
Members are encouraged to send in their Caption ideas for a chance to win the second hand MGI Navigator buggy* shown in this image (you will have to trust us, it is in the image);
* at the time of writing the condition of the second hand buggy can not be verified. All enquiries should be sent to former major pennant caddy, David Gaffaney!
Please send your captions to gm@oatlansdgolf.com.au.

Pennant Update
Men’s Major Pennant
Well at last we got to play our long-awaited semi-final last Sunday at Campbelltown GC. To say the course (like most of Sydney) was wet is an understatement. The ducks were in heaven out there as there were lakes everywhere.
We were playing Lakeside in the semis, and I think they had half their golf club there. After some of the best match play golf you could ever see, we unfortunately went down 4/3.
The boys gave their all and did Oatlands so proud, with all games going down to the wire.
Sam Reece who was playing their Club champion from 2019 just missed out on a win with a chip on the last lipping out. Sam & his Caddie for the morning, Judy Williams, were an awesome team.
Rowan Easterbrook won 2/1 with some awesome golf against a tough opponent. As we all know Rowan is a tough guy to beat on any course in match play and this was no exception.
Nathan Wareham, Will Reece & Brad Hooper as always gave their all but only just got beaten to the line with all 3 playing great golf only to be beaten 2/1, 3/2, 3/2 respectfully. Some incredible shots were played by these guys.
Luke Mason, our Captain, as always lead from the front and beat his opponent 2/1. Luke has been a great captain throughout the pennant and an important part of this team.
Grant Lomas who was playing a tough opponent came in with a great win 2/1. Grant did have a mishap, well not really Grant but his infamous Caddie David Gaffaney, who somehow put Grants remote buggy with his 4week old new golf bag at the bottom of a creek. The entire buggy & bag totally disappeared into 6ft of murky water.
As I always say, the pennant team is exactly that, a team event, but not just only the awesome guys who gave their all to a great performance! It’s the team of Caddies, who every week gave up their time to help out so much, the green staff, the pro-shop, the catering staff, the rules officials & Oatlands Golf Club Itself !
To all mentioned above Thank you!
It’s been such a pleasure to manage such a great pennant team & more importantly just great people!
Thanking you
Ken Doolan.
Interclub Challenge
Interclub Challenge was cancelled last weekend due to wet conditions.
Our next match is away at Bonnie Doon GC against Bonnie Doon GC on Sunday 22nd May at 7:30am.
