Oatlands Mixed Pennant Side Wins 2021 Pennant

The Final of the 2021 Mixed Pennant competition took place on Sunday 21st November against Ryde Parramatta at Bankstown on a very wet day. Oatlands won the match 4-1. The whole team did an outstanding job with every pair ending up on top against a very strong Ryde Parramatta team. Results in the Final were:

  • Linda Gyzen & Kane Milne – Won 4/3
  • Debbie Jepson & Tony Monaghan – 1Up, 2 to play (unfinished)
  • Justa Kim & Lindsay Macinnes – 1Up, 2 to play (unfinished)
  • Stephanie Monaghan & Peter Crawford – Won 3/2
  • Leonie Guthrie & Ben Mees – Won 1Up

The Oatlands team which also included Pixie Sasse & Chris Garland and Linda Bestford & Christian O’Reilly went through the entire season undefeated. All 14 players made a significant contribution to a very successful season and the team unity was evident throughout. They had 5 wins and a tie in their 6 home and away matches, knocking out Monash, Pennant Hills & Beverley Park.

They were the highest ranked and only undefeated team going into the finals series. They then beat Kogarah in the QF and Bexley in the SF before winning the Final on Sunday. It is hard singling out any one player as there were many players who had excellent results through the season… but a special shoutout must go to the player of the season who was undefeated and played incredible golf throughout the season and especially in the final series – Stephanie Monaghan.

This team win makes up for an agonising close loss in the Final last year. Congratulations to all involved! A special thanks to the faithful Oatlands supporters throughout the season and to Oatlands Board and staff for their support.

From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 72.0mm,  Rainfall for 2021: 980.5mm   Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 10 feet

The team finished preparing areas for re-turfing around the 3rd and 7th bunker surrounds on Monday with the replacement Zoysia being laid on Tuesday. A small area on the 3rd apron edge was also replaced as was the worn collar area on the 7th green, these two areas were replaced with Santa Ana couch. While the team was in the mood for re-turfing, we stripped the 15th men’s championship tee pad, levelled this pad with our Ventrac power rake attachment, and laid new couch. The couch is establishing very quickly under the current weather conditions, so we are expecting this tee to be back in use for the 1st round of the men’s matchplay, therefore the Oatlands Cup and the final of the WS Targett will be played from the back of the middle tee.

The very humid weather is ideal for disease development in our putting surfaces. To keep all diseases under control, a preventative fungicide application was made to all greens on Monday morning with growth regulator also added to the tank mix. We have the growth under regulation so much that minimal grass is being cut from the greens, (don’t have to empty the catchers once for all 18 greens), even though we are mowing them every day. This ensures green speeds are consistent throughout the entire day, from the first groups in the morning until the last groups putting out late in the afternoon.

The coverage on our tees is improving after the renovations and fertiliser application, but a lack of hot days (2 days over 30 degrees so far) has somewhat stalled the growth on all our couch surfaces. The humidity is great for kikuyu growth on our fairways and roughs, but the couch requires warm sunny days and warmer nights to increase the soil temperatures. Soil moisture levels are high from the rain and overcast days, so once the warm days arrive the growth of our couch surfaces will explode.

The aquatic weeds in the 9th and 13th ponds have browned off as expected, with some minor spray drift affecting the grass surrounds of the 13th pond. This should recover quickly as this grass is only receiving a reduced rate of the chemical from the overspray.

Staff member Jack Parker, who joined the team in February this year, was nominated for Apprentice of the Year after achieving the highest pass mark of all Turf Management students at Ryde TAFE. Jack attended Liverpool Golf Club on Monday where he and all other top Turf Management students from TAFE’s around NSW were interviewed by a panel to determine the NSW Turf Management Graduate of the Year. Jack was successful, so a big congratulations to him for all his hard work over the past 4 years both here at Oatlands and at Pennant Hills Golf Club. He will now travel to next year’s Superintendent’s conference in Melbourne to compete for the National Graduate of the year, as well as attending the conference. Part of his prize for winning the NSW section, is a trip to the US to visit and experience a US Open behind the scenes which will be a great experience.

This weekend we are planning to cut and roll greens on Saturday, and only removing dew from them on Sunday. This could change to only cutting greens on Saturday depending on how much rain we receive on Friday. I will dot out a course for the Oatlands Cup, not sure how difficult I will make it as I don’t know if the clubhouse carpets could cope with 2 weeks of tears!

Enjoy the weekend!

The Course Team.

Docket Signing and Cash Payment

As of Monday 22nd November, the Bar, Sandwich Hut, and Pro Shop will require members making purchases on their House Account or Bar Credit to sign the docket as proof of purchase.

This process was put on-hold at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic when NSW Health direction was to avoid communal touch points however, now that the State has exceeded 80% vaccination status, this direction is no longer in place and as such, signing of dockets will be re-instated as of Monday 22nd November.

Also, on Monday 22nd November, all areas of Club operation will once again accept cash payments. This has also been on hold since the beginning of the pandemic for the reasons listed above and is being re-instated due to the change of advice from NSW Health as a result of vaccinations.

Golf Lesson Practice Balls – Professional Staff Only

Following feedback from the membership that the use of white golf balls on the practice range for golf lessons was causing difficulties in locating errant shots from the 13th tee, the Club has purchased yellow lesson balls for our PGA staff to use. These are pictured below.

We ask members to please not remove these balls from the range as they have been implemented to reduce the impact of golf lessons on golfers on course, and unfortunately have been disappearing in large numbers.

We thank you for your co-operation and understanding.

Five after 5 is Back

The Club’s popular Five after 5 series are back again for 2021-22 with the four events scheduled for November 26 (washed out), December 17, January 7 and 21. The timesheets to book for these are live on the Club’s website.

Mixed Pennant 2022 – Expressions of Interest

It is strange times when we are calling for expressions of interest for a pennant competition that has not been completed for the current year, but that is the case with the 2022 Mixed Pennant competition which due to Covid is still running in 2021 and has been scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2022.

Oatlands has a strong history in this event, including a runner-up finish to Ryde-Parramatta in 2020, and is again in the final of the 2021 Pennant this coming Sunday.

Any members wishing to take part in the 2022 squad should email the General Manager, Sam Howe, at gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au by no later than 5pm on Friday 26th November. All EOIs will be forwarded to team managers Debbie Jepson and Peter Crawford for consideration.
