From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 0.0mm,  Rainfall for 2021: 606.5mm   Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 11 feet

The team has focused on course preparation this week with the 2nd round of the Men’s Mid-week Club Championships on Wednesday, the Women’s Foursomes Championships starting on Thursday, and then the Men’s Foursomes Championships on Saturday. The course is in great condition with weather conditions being very favourable. As a result, moisture levels in greens have been reduced and this has resulted in firmer and faster putting surfaces. Members are asked to continue repairing pitch marks on greens and filling divots on fairways during competition rounds and social rounds. Single spike pitch repairers are being provided to all members starting tomorrow, see the video below, to assist in caring for the course.

The area at the top of the 11th fairway has been completed this week with new drainage installed, and couch turf being laid then covered over with new green mesh to reinstate the cart path. The new sub surface drainage installed in this area will ensure carts can use this path in all weather conditions when carts are permitted.

The team has shelled out the bunker on the 19th hole this week to improve the quality of this hazard whenever this hole is in play. During the winter months, we rotate our Par 3 holes and bring in the 19th in, to rest the tees and greens of the other par 3’s (2nd, 5th, 9th, 12th and 18th). The team will link up a drainage line that came into this bunker through the face, connecting it to the existing drainage and thus stopping this bunker filling with water almost every time it rains.

Herbicide spraying for pre-emergent control of Winter Grass and weeds has continued this week on fairways but has been interrupted with the busy golf schedule. Fungicide applications to fairways have also started and will continue into next week.

Work has also started on cleaning up the debris from the stockpiled sand/ dirt behind the screen on the 8th flyover area. Debris such as drainage pipe and old bunker lining from the recent bunker rejuvenation project were mixed through this sand/ dirt, so course staff have gone through and removed these items so that the sand/ dirt can be reused in planned mounding work on the course in the coming months.

Volunteers were on course Monday morning performing a bunker run before the competition, lifting sprinklers on the 6th and 7th fairways, cleaning and trimming drainage pits and repairing the nets on the practice bays. Thank you for all your efforts each week!

Have great weekend everyone!

The Course Team

Head Chef Appointment – Andrew Yang

The Club is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Head Chef, Andrew Yang, who will commence at the Club on 21st June.

Andrew has been working as the Head Chef at Bonnie Doon Golf Club for over two years however lives locally to Oatlands Golf Club.

Next week’s Enews will include a profile on Andrew and also outline the dates for upcoming Club events in July and August.

Junior Development Programme Fundraiser – Monday 14th June

The Club is pleased to announce that the annual JDP Fundraiser will proceed as planned this year on Monday of the Queen’s birthday long weekend.

After the Covid cancellation of this event in 2020, we are looking forward to getting as many members and their guests involved in the day as possible. The event, which will be an ambrose with a 12pm shotgun start followed by a light meal, will see a number of our 90 JDP members taking part and engaging with participants on the golf course throughout the day. This is a great way for members to support our enviable junior programme and the future of the Club.

Golf Tips – Warm Up with Max

This week, Oatland’s Trainee Professional Max Dakic talks about warming up properly using the Club’s practice nets.

To book a lesson with any of our PGA Professionals, please contact the Pro Shop or book online.

Golf Lesson Price Increase

Members are advised that the prices for half hour and one hour golf lessons with our PGA Professionals will increase from 1st June.

The lesson prices have not increased at Oatlands Golf Club for a number of years and this increase brings the pricing in line with industry standard and is commensurate with the quality of service our highly qualified team deliver.

The price increase is as follows:

  • Half hour lesson: Increase from $65 to $70 / lesson
  • One hour lessons: Increase from $110 to $120 / lesson

Titleist Fitting Day – Tuesday 6th July

The Pro Shop team in-conjunction with Titleist Australia will be hosting a Titleist Fitting Event on Tuesday 6th July from 9am – 1pm.

These events are a great way for members to experience the latest in golf technology and ensure that your next set of clubs are specifically fitted to all aspects of your game.

Every golfer is different and with the advances in golf technology in the last two decades, clubs can now be fitted to suit your unique clubhead speed, clubhead path and clubface angle at impact.

Bookings for these fitting sessions are essential and space is limited so get in early to avoid disappointment.

Bookings can be made via the Club website or by contacting the Pro Shop.

Tiger Tee Challenge – Pace of Play / Timesheet Changes

The Club’s Tiger Tee Challenge has gone from strength to strength in recent months with over 120 members and visitors taking part in the 3-4 events per month.

Unfortunately, this has created some issues with Pace of Play with the latter half of the field frequently taking almost 5 hours to complete their rounds.

This is not unexpected, given the nature of the event and difficult course setup, however is something the Match Committee and Pro Shop have been reviewing for solutions.

As such, commencing 19th June, all Tiger Tee Challenge events will be played with tee times starting at 9 minute intervals. This allows more gap between groups and improves the flow on the golf course by providing more space for the inevitable slow play contributors (lost balls, etc) to occur without having as great a domino effect on the field.

Pace of Play for Tiger Tee Challenges will continue to be monitored by the Pro Shop and additional course marshaling implemented to assist pace of play.

Rules Corner – Rule 22 Foursomes

The Club’s Foursomes Championship for men and women will be held over the next two weeks.

Rule 22 covers Foursomes (played either in match play or stroke play), where two partners compete together as a side by alternating in making strokes at a single ball. The Rules for this form of play are essentially the same as for individual play, except for requiring the partners to alternate in teeing off to start a hole and to play out each hole with alternate shots.

The OGC Championships consist of 36-hole stroke event, played as two rounds of 18 holes.  (There is also an 18-hole event of the day held in conjunction.)

The Club’s Conditions of Competition for the championship tell us how the event is conducted.

  • A Stroke event played with a partner and using only one ball.
  • The partners are required to hit off from alternate tees. The partners decide who will take the odd /even tees in the first round. The partner who hit off the odd tees in the first round must hit off the even tees in the second round (and vice-versa for the other partner).
  • Once a player has teed off the partners strike the ball alternately until the hole is completed. This alternate striking of the ball continues even if a penalty is incurred.
  • Scoring is identical to the method used for Stroke events. The card should show both Gross and Nett scores after handicap deduction.

Rule 22.2 Either Partner May Act for Side

Either partner may take any allowed action for the side before the stroke is made, such as to mark the spot of the ball and lift, replace, drop and place the ball, no matter which partner’s turn it is to play next for the side.

Rule 22.3 Side Must Alternate in Making Strokes

On each hole, the partners must make each stroke for the side in alternating order:

If a stroke is cancelled or otherwise does not count under any Rule (except when a stroke is made in the wrong order in breach of this Rule), the same partner who made the stroke must make the next stroke for the side.  For example, when a stroke is cancelled under Rule 11.1b Exception 2 – When Ball Played from Putting Green Accidently Hits Any Person, Animal, or Movable Obstruction on Putting Green.

If the side decides to play a provisional ball, it must be played by the partner whose turn it is to play the side’s next stroke.

Any penalty strokes for the side do not affect the partners’ alternating order of play.  For example, a penalty stroke for relief from a Penalty Area or for Unplayable Ball.

Penalty for Making a Stroke in the Wrong Order in Breach of Rule 22.3: General Penalty.

In stroke play, the side must correct the mistake:

  • The right partner must make a stroke from where the side made the first stroke in the wrong order.
  • The stroke made in the wrong order and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected (including strokes made and any penalty strokes solely from playing that ball) do not count.
  • If the side does not correct the mistake before making a stroke to begin another hole or, for the last hole of the round, before returning its scorecard, the side is disqualified.

Rule 22.5 Partners May Share Clubs

Rule 4.1b(2) is modified to allow partners to share clubs, so long as the total number of clubs they have together is not more than 14.

If you are checking the rules references in the Player’s Edition of the Rules of Golf and you are referred to the Full Rules you can find the full rules on the free R&A Rules App for phones or tablets, or here https://www.randa.org/en/rog/2019/pages/the-rules-of-golf

Pennant Update

Men’s Interclub

The team travelled to Royal Sydney last Sunday to take on Concord in week 2 of the Interclub Challenge.

Concord are a strong and determined team and that was evident by several of them arriving before dawn to walk the course!

The result was in the balance down to the wire with the last match going down the 18th.

Luke “Specsavers” Mason had to win the 17th and 18th to win his match and this feat allowed the team to grab a half for the day. Luke will also be accepting gifts of Sharpie pens to help him correctly identify his ball and not hit his teammate’s in future…

Congratulations on strong wins to Peter Schleibs and Ian Priest.

The half was a fair result given the hard fought day.

This Sunday the team plays The Lakes at Concord with the winner progressing to the Sectional Final.

Results:

  • Luke Mason – Won 1 Up
  • Grant Lomas – Lost 2/1
  • Ian Priest – Won 2/1
  • Mark Robinson – Lost 4/3
  • James Coates – Square
  • Jackson Jones – Lost 4/3
  • Peter Schliebs – Won 5/3
  • Blair McDonald – Square

Mixed

Our Mixed Pennant team had another very close and exciting win at home on Sunday. So many close matches coming down to the last putt. Oatlands won 3-2 to remain undefeated. Well done to all.

Results:

  • Pete Crawford & Linda Gyzen – All square
  • Lindsay Macinnes & Justa Kim – All square
  • Tony Monaghan & Debbie Jepson – All square
  • Ben Mees & Leonie Guthrie – Won 3/2
  • Chris Garland & Pixie Sasse – All square
  • Christian O’Reilly & Linda Bestford – Won 3/2

Next up is an away match against Pennant Hills next Sunday 23/5.

Men’s Master Pennant

The Master pennant side traveled to Eastlake GC on Sunday 16th May for the first match of their season.

The Eastlake course was very difficult in the wind and with a number of tees out of play local knowledge was more important than usual.

Unfortunately our side were soundly beaten and were unable to record a point against a strong Eastlake side whose top three players had handicaps of one or better.

Congratulations to Chris Lamond, Matt Seamons and Phil Reece making their debut for the Club in Master Pennant this year.

Men’s Major Pennant

The first leg of the postponed Major Pennant relegation final for Division 2 was played on Saturday 15th May and what a fantastic result.

We came away with a fantastic home win in the playoffs against Glenmore Heritage Valley and a huge 6-1 win.

  • Rowan Easterbrook started out like a champion and did not let his opponent into the match with a 6/5 win.
  • Luke Mason never gave up, fighting all the way and coming back to win 1up.
  • Grant Lomas was in form from the beginning and took it up a level on the back 9 for a comfortable 4/2 win.
  • Charlie Kim held his nerve and won his match on the 18th hole 1up.
  • Will Reece was playing their team and Club Captain, Andrew Robb who he had defeated at Glenmore in 2020. After a fast start Will was overtaken to narrowly lose his match to his more seasoned opponent.
  • Nathan Wareham playing at No.2 was his usual calm self an too strong for his opponent.
  • Tim Fraser, normally better known for his short game was on fire with his ball striking and recorded a 4/3 win.

A special mention has to go to Sam Recce a fantastic up & coming future pennants player who won his match easily at reserve. And more importantly just a great young man!

We play the return leg away at Glenmore on the 19th of June needing only one and half matches to remain in division 2 for 2022.

Thanking you all (a very proud Manager),

Ken Doolan
