Mother Nature was on our side this week which enabled the course team and a passionate group of volunteers to complete a very successful Autumn renovation period. Whilst the aeration of fairways will continue into next week, the greens renovation work and many other tasks around the course and maintenance shed were performed and finished in time for the course to reopen for play on Thursday morning.
The sunny days dried the sand on the greens so it could be swept into the open aeration holes by our sweep n fill machine. The aeration holes were 200mm deep which will be great for infiltration rates of the putting surfaces and allow for a deeper root system which will lead to an overall stronger turf plant. There was minimal lifting of the putting surfaces during the verti draining process which will mean a quicker recovery.
The course closure has provided a great opportunity to aerate 11 fairways this week without the interruption of play. Fairways remaining include the 6th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th with these to be finished next week. The fungicide applications to fairways commenced on Thursday morning and this process will also continue next week before and after play, as the application requires watering in to target the disease pathogens.
Our tree contractors were on course Wednesday removing several dead trees throughout the course. Their trucks did mark up areas across the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 16th holes but the course team has aerated these track marks and used garden forks to lift the areas up, so they should recover quickly.
The practice green was given a light topdress this week which will encourage the bent grass to creep and knit together. The light topdressing will also fill in any depressions across the surface which will provide a smooth playing surface when this green opens for play or practice in the next few weeks. The height of cut is at 8mm this week and will be reduced by 1mm each week until we are at 3mm. The 19th green was reseeded on Tuesday morning, and with the ideal weather that has followed, I’m hoping to see a nice green tinge across this green by late next week.
Our volunteers were on course for all three days of the course closure and completed the following tasks:
- Pressure cleaning pathways
- Painting the floors in the on course toilets
- Painting the car park lines and speed humps
- Major clean out around the maintenance shed area
- Hazard line along the top of the 13th pond wall painted
Thank you to David Gaffaney, John Carey, Col McRae, Neil Vale, David Pickering, John Mitchell, Peter Bowyer, and a new face Simon Twiggs. A very big three days for most of you and I’m sure you slept well each night. I’m very appreciative of your on-going support, never complaining about any task that you may be asked to perform. Thank you gentlemen!
Greens won’t be cut this weekend because of the renovations. I will be setting pins on Saturday, with Garry setting them on Sunday
Happy Golfing!

Ladies Renovation Getaway
On Sunday 6th April, 22 of the Oatlands ladies travelled to Bowral for 3 days of golf, friendship and good fun. Weather was great, albeit cool, and the golf was interesting. Big thanks must go to Linda Gyzen, Barbara Beasley & Anne Stanfield who organised the golf, accommodation and dinners for all of the ladies.
Melbourne Golf Trip
This past week, I had the pleasure of accompanying a group of Oatlands Members on an unforgettable golf trip to Melbourne. We were fortunate to play at some of Australia’s finest courses, including Kingston Heath, Peninsula Kingswood, Commonwealth Golf Club and Yarra Yarra Golf Club.
The weather was exceptional all week, and the condition of each course was nothing short of outstanding.
I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to all the members who joined us, your company made the trip truly special and enjoyable. We’re already looking forward to planning the next one and hope to see you there.
