From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 9.0mm,  Rainfall for 2024: 990.0mm, Dam: 100%,  Green Speed: 10feet

All tees have now been cored and fertilised with the cutting height of these surfaces dropped down to 8mm to remove the visible effects of recent mite damage and to improve the appearance of these surfaces. The couch surfaces have improved in colour and now we should start to see some increase in growth on these surfaces after the aeration and fertiliser application, and most importantly an increase in soil temperatures as we move towards summer.

The spraying of fairways and roughs with pre-emergent herbicide and residual insecticide was halted while the renovation of the tees was performed. Now that the tees are completed, we will continue the spraying program. The remaining holes to be sprayed are holes that we wanted to see an improvement of the grass coverage before applying the pre-emergent herbicide, so that the herbicide didn’t slow any of the recovery of the thin areas.

The fairways are presenting well but the blue line preferred lie areas will remain in place for the time being. Fairways are being mown twice a week and this is managing the growth without the need to apply growth regulator yet. Selected longer areas of rough have be mown this week with some areas that don’t receive irrigation not growing strongly due to the lack of rainfall before last week.

Our contract arborists were on course all day Tuesday to remove limbs from the lightning strike tree between the 7th and 8th fairways, saving this tree as a habitat tree for local wildlife. As the limbs were lowered down by the crane, all cavities were inspected for wildlife so that we could save and re-home them. During the day we saved baby cockatoo’s, a native beehive, and a possum which scurried off towards the toilet block and no doubt will make a new home in one of the trees in this area.

Two trees near the toilet block which had structural damage up through their trunks were also removed after permission was granted by the tree officer from Parramatta Council. We must replace these two trees with at least two new trees, but we will plant more than this in the coming months along the left side of the 6th hole as we look to ensure the tree canopy on this side of the hole continues to provide protection to our neighbours into the future.

Volunteers were on course Monday morning raking bunkers for the competition, gurney cleaning of paths continued, OOB/Hazard pegs checked, tree guards repaired, fairway sprinkler heads trimmed, and painting of the simulator studio walls was completed. Fairway divotting was also performed on Thursday morning. A big effort by everyone involved this week, your assistance is always very much appreciated!

Greens will be cut on Saturday and Sunday mornings with the dew removed from them on Monday morning.

Happy Golfing!

The Course Team.

The Melbourne Storm Vandal Strikes Again

For many years, a strange anomaly has taken place at Oatlands Golf Club whereby every year the Melbourne Storm make the NRL Grand Final (which is too often, particularly if you’re an Eels supporter), a vandal sneaks onto our course and paints a Melbourne Storm logo on our beautiful fairways.

This vandal, for ease of communication let’s just call him Course Superintendent Dom Yates, has quite a bit of artistic skill to make up for his lack of allegiance to his local football team.

With the the Storm once again making the NRL Grand Final, our Vandal (Dom) has struck again, and this year defaced our 10th fairway with his “art”!

While there are very few of us who want to see the Storm win another grand final, the pin positions on Monday promise to be tricky if they are beaten again by the Panthers.

Bistro 94, Food and Friends on Friday’s

The launch of Bistro 94 on Friday’s in September has been a great success, with an average attendance for the month of 120 people each Friday evening.

The regular pub style dining event will now continue for the foreseeable future with bookings now available until the end of 2024.

The relaxed pub style dining and menu have been very popular with members and the local residents of Oatlands. It has been tremendous to see so many of our neighbours visiting the Club with friends and family over the last month, with many joining the Club as social members.

The continuation of this initiative requires the ongoing support of members and we encourage you all to join us on a Friday night for a great night of food and friendship.

As this evening continues into October, November and December, bookings are still encouraged however we have plenty of capacity for walk-ins and / or a last minute decision to stay for dinner after golf.

Thank you to all those that have attended over the last month and made the launch so successful and we hope to see more of you over the coming months!
