From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 0.0mm,  Rainfall for 2024: 935.5mm, Dam: 85%,  Green Speed: 9.5feet

The course team has been preparing the course this week for the 1st round of the Club Championship’s with the wind on Thursday being of no help at all. The vacuum and blowers worked hard on the Monday and Tuesday to have half the course spotless. We used the tow behind blower in conjunction with the vacuum, blowing the leaf debris out of the roughs/tree lines and onto the edge of the fairways so the vacuum can collect it quicker and easier. The wind on Thursday littered the course with debris and put us right back where we started on Monday.

The GUR areas on the 14th and 17th collars have been cut out and new turf will be laid on Friday. We took about 15 good plugs from the 14th collar, and we have put these into bare areas on the 18th collar. All collars will be sprayed for mites next week with a liquid growth stimulator added to the tank mix to encourage some early season recovery growth.

Fairways are growing well after the recent fertiliser application, but we will mark some areas with a blue square in which a preferred lie can be taken, like we have done in recent years. The 7th, 11th and 14th holes require this blue line, as they are shade affected fairways which see minimal direct sunlight in the winter months causing the turf to thin out in winter and recover slower in spring as they still aren’t getting full direct sunlight throughout the day just yet.

Greens were dusted this week after the morning field had played so that the sand could dry quickly on the surface and be broomed in immediately. The light dusting will improve the ball roll for truer and faster putting surfaces. Moisture levels are being monitored to ensure a firm putting surface without placing any stress on the plant. Greens will be rolled Thursday and Friday morning to also firm up the putting surfaces.

Volunteers were on course Monday morning working on preparations for the simulator studio, gurney cleaning the 2nd tee pathway, and edging concrete pathways. Thank you to all those that attended, as always your assistance is appreciated!

Greens will be cut and rolled on Saturday morning and cut again on Sunday morning. Happy Golfing!

The Course Team.

Mixed Foursomes Championships – New Winners for 2024

The 2024 Mixed Foursomes Championship was played on Sunday 15th September, with a big field tackling the 36 hole event in challenging wind.

2024 saw first time winners in both the Championship and Nett events, with Wil Reece and Jenny Park taking out the Championship with a Gross score of 161 while Scott & Nicole Whittaker came from behind after the first 18-holes to win the Nett trophy with a score of 151.

Well done to the winners and to all competitors that contested the event!

Sam Reece wins second PGA Associate Match for the Year

Congratulations to PGA Associate Sam Reece on winning his second Monday match for the year on Monday at Asquith Golf Club with a tremendous score of 5-under (65).

Max Dakic also played well finishing tied-8th with a score of even par (70).

Well done to both on a great result!

Charlie Kim wins Carnarvon Senior OOM and gains Invite into NSW Senior Open

OGC Member Charlie Kim won the Carnarvon Senor Order of Merit event on Monday 16th September with a score of 74 (+2).

This is a tremendous feat in isolation, however this event also qualifies Charlie for the NSW Seniors Open alongside the likes of Peter Lonard and Peter Senior at Thurgoona Country Club in November.

Charlie is yet to decide on whether he is able to take part in the NSW Senior Open due to other commitments, but qualifying is a great achievement in itself.

Well done Charlie!

Cameron Smith to play the NSW Open Championship

LIV Golf is a polarising topic for many golfers, however there is little doubt it has had a big impact on big name tour professionals returning to compete in Australia.

As a continuation of this bi-product of the split at the top level of professional golf, Golf NSW has just announced that Aussie superstar Cameron Smith, 2022 Open Champion and Captain of LIV Golf’s Ripper GC, has officially confirmed his participation in the 2024 NSW Open Golf Championship at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club – a spectacular 18-hole championship course in one of NSW’s most popular golfing regions – the Murray.

Smith, 31, has enjoyed a stellar career on the international stage, including his historic win at St Andrews, three victories in the LIV Golf League and six titles on the PGA Tour, and is fantastic that he will be teeing it up at the $800,000 NSW Open Championship.
