From the Course
Rainfall for the Week: 11.5mm, Rainfall for 2024: 934.5mm, Dam: 100%, Green Speed: 9.5 feet
Preparations for next week’s spring renovations have continued with the greens being sprayed with fungicides to provide control of Pythium disease during the renovation process. Whilst aeration of the greens has great benefits to the long term health of the greens, the actual process does injure the plant by bruising the leaf which leaves the plant susceptible to infection from pythium spores. This week’s fungicide application will ensure the plant is protected as the fungicide will already be in the plants system when the disease pathogens attack.
Greens have also been fertilised this week to initiate some growth before renovations, so recovery is quicker afterwards. We apply half of the required fertiliser before renovations and then the other half is applied once the greens have had the sand rubbed into the open holes. The renovation process during this spring period is topdressing all greens with sand and then aerating with 12mm solid tines to a depth of 225mm. After the solid tining, all remaining sand on the putting surface is rubbed into the open holes which will backfill all these holes with fresh sand which will enable better moisture movement through the profile and provide an easier channel for new roots to grow down.
Fairways are also being aerated during this spring period with sand topdressing being performed before the solid tining process. Once the sand has been swept into the open holes, fairways will be fertilised and then sprayed with a residual insecticide and a pre-emergent herbicide which will increase growth and protect these surfaces from pests and weeds.
The blowers and vacuum have been busy for most of the week tidying up and removing the leaf debris from the course. Fairways have been mown this week, and contractors have replaced the irrigation pump at the 12th tee and the transfer pump in the 9th pond which pumps water to the top of the 6th creek. This water makes its way back to the 9th pond so that the pump can repeat the process. The aerator in the 13th pond has been removed and will be replaced during the course closure period, as the current pump has stopped working.
Volunteers were on course Monday morning repairing tree guards, checking OOB and Hazard pegs, checking/cleaning/repairing the practice nets, and trimming and cleaning drainage pits throughout the course. Thank you gentlemen for all of your assistance this week, it is always very much appreciated!
Greens will be rolled on Saturday morning and cut on Sunday morning.
Happy Golfing!
The Course Team.
Club Closure for Course Renovations – Monday 19th – Wednesday 21st August inclusive
Members are advised that the Club’s bi-annual Course Renovation is scheduled for Monday 19th August – Wednesday 21st August inclusive.
These renovations are vitally important to ensure the long-term health of our turf surfaces and to provide the best opportunity for growth as we come out of winter and into the warmer months.
Given the continued difficult conditions of prolonged rain events and high volumes of traffic in recent years, it is vitally important the upcoming renovation is completed in full.
During the three days of renovations, all Club facilities (including Clubhouse, Admin, Pro Shop, Practice Facilities) will be closed.
The Club does receive intermittent requests to organise tee times at other Clubs for members during renovations. Unfortunately, this is not possible, as we are unable to offer tee times for all members at other Clubs, and as renovation closures are a regular part of maintenance for all Golf Clubs, we would be unable to reciprocate the volume of requests we would get in return. Therefore, while we do request and provide tee times in extenuating circumstances, it is common practice across the golf industry that renovation closures are not considered extenuating.
As mentioned in the Course Update, the turf course has held up well through winter despite the wet weather and we expect the course to recover quickly coming out of the renovation and into Spring.
The video below is an example of the type of renovation that takes place to our greens during this closure with holes punched into green surfaces which are then filled with sand to reduce the compaction and thatch build up.
Recovery time is generally 2-3 weeks depending on weather and warmth.
Bistro 94 – Starts Friday 6th September 2024
The OGC hospitality team held a Bistro 94 menu trial on Thursday 8th August with 40 members attending and providing extensive feedback on the menu, and all aspects of the event delivery. There will be a number of Menu adjustments made prior to the event launch on Friday 6th September 2024. The updated menu will be published in next week’s Enews.
Members are reminded that the launch of this new initiative will see all meals at 2-for-1 every Friday in September for members and their guests, and anyone living in the suburb of Oatlands. We expect a very high demand for the launch of this event in September and therefore members are encouraged to book early via the Club website.

Pennant Update
Men’s Super Senior Pennant
The Oatlands Super Seniors travelled down to Bayview GC on Monday to take on our neighbours Muirfield GC.
There had been heavy rain over the weekend and Bayview was still very wet underfoot.
The grounds team were doing major drainage work on the first fairway so play started on the 2nd hole, with the 1st hole becoming an 80m par 3 and playing as the 18th hole.
Despite the wet conditions, the greens were very fast and difficult to read.
A reshuffle of the team saw us have a good win, with the final result being 5 matches to 3, with wins for:
- Lindsay Macinnes
- John Farrar
- Richard Lees
- Mike McFarland
- Rob Palin
What a super effort from the guys this week in the conditions. Next Thursday we are off to Asquith GC to take on Monash CC.
