From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 14.5mm,  Rainfall for 2024: 577.0mm, Dam: 100%,  Green Speed: 9.5 feet

With turf now available from our supplier, the track mark areas across the 13th, 14th, and 15th have been prepped and new turf has been laid down. The timing of this work is particularly pleasing as some wet weather is predicted for the weekend. With the turf covering the exposed soil areas, some protection from the rain is expected, and as long as the rain isn’t too heavy, it will be ideal to keep the turf irrigated while it establishes.

New couch turf has also been laid down near the 9th pond to finish off around the pond, with preparation work on the track marks from the new 7th tee down to the 9th pond set to commence early next week with turf to be laid the following week.

Greens were dusted on Monday morning to level out some minor unevenness on putting surfaces from renovations. The height of cut is now back down to 3mm which is our normal height of cut, with speed of greens now regulated by moisture levels in the profiles. This time of year, very little irrigation is required on greens as the temperatures are ideal for growing bent grass and Wintergrass (poa annua) with very little moisture losses from evaporation. This allows moisture levels to be reduced which firms putting surfaces without placing any stress on the turf. One thing we can’t control is rainfall, so therefore we have to deal with the cards that Mother Nature deals out!

It should be noted that these mild weather conditions that have very little drying effect on the soil profiles of the greens, are the same for the fairways, meaning high amounts of rainfall will saturate the ground and take a long time to dry out. The recently completed verti draining of fairways will be of benefit if we receive the predicted rainfall this weekend, but certain precautions will always be taken to safeguard the course against unnecessary damage, especially heading into winter where recovery is slow as growth rates reduce.

Our volunteers were on course Monday and Thursday morning, with fairway sprinklers trimmed, paths edged, the floor in the on-course ladies toilet painted, new mulch in the garden bed around the toilet block, fairways divotting, Crabgrass weeding, and gurney cleaning of the path near the 7th tee area. Thank you to all those volunteers involved with this work this week, it is very much appreciated!

Greens will be cut both mornings this weekend.

Happy Golfing

The Course Team.
