Junior Development Programme Fundraiser – Monday 10th June

The Club is pleased to announce that the annual JDP Fundraiser will again take place this year on the Monday of the King’s Birthday long weekend.
The event will be an ambrose with a 12pm shotgun start followed by a presentation. This is a great way for members to support our junior programme and the future of the Club.

In 2023, our Juniors won the metropolitan and state Encourage Shield Pennant, and with over 50 juniors now with handicaps, this is only the beginning of a wonderful period in the long history of successful Junior golf at Oatlands.

The event will cost members $35pp and guests $75pp and will include a bacon & egg roll before golf along with lots of great prizes.

All money raised will go back in to the Club’s Junior Development Programme.

From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 0.0mm,  Rainfall for 2024: 665.5mm, Dam: 100%,  Green Speed: 10.0 feet

All greens have been aerated this week using solid needle tines down to a depth of 150mm. This process is of great benefit after the recent wet weather period as it relieves built up compaction in the greens soil profile, which then allows air and water movement through the profile and provides an opportunity for new root growth. The needle tining has very little impact on the putting surface, and after the green is rolled, the only evidence that the green has been aerated is the small tine holes that may be still visible. The team have this process so well refined that we can aerate all the greens in and around play in a week, with no impact on play.

Tee complexes have been sprayed again this week with a herbicide to control Wintergrass weeds. The herbicide used this week is absorbed by the plant through its leaf’s, so the sunny dry weather was ideal for this application. Herbicide treatment of kikuyu weeds in our collars and aprons was continued this week and will be a constant task over the winter months.

The track mark areas across the 17th flyover and from the 9th tee to the 9th pond were rotary hoed this week, new growing medium was incorporated, and turf has been laid across these sites. The next areas to do are the washed out area on the LHS of the 9th green surround, and the front of the ladies 11th tee, where we plan to merge the couch into the kikuyu in a more natural way to the existing surface contours.

Volunteers were on course this week performing a bunker run before the competition, blowing sand back into bunkers from the entry/exit points, painting and clubhouse maintenance, and divotting fairways. Thank you to all our volunteers this week, your help is very much appreciated by the course team and your fellow members!

Greens will be mown on Saturday and Sunday morning.

Happy Golfing!

The Course Team.

Pennant Update

Men’s Interclub

The Oatlands Interclub team headed to Avondale GC on Sunday 16th May with the daunting task of taking on the home team. The boys were up for the fight but in the end just missed out on a memorable win, coming away with a well earnt 4-4 result. We had the chance to knock them off with our Number 2, 5 and 6 all going to the 18th but unfortunately falling agonizingly short. It was a great effort and we should be taking a lot of confidence out of this result.

Our next assignment is to beat Manly at Terrey Hills on Sunday, this is our redemption match as they beat us in the final last year

Individual results were as follows:

  • Luke Mason – Lost 6/5
  • Earl Rees – Halved
  • Ian Priest – Won 3/2
  • Tom McMurtry – Won 5/3
  • Budd Frome – Halved
  • Blair McDonald – Won 2up
  • Mark Robinson – Lost 2/1
  • James Roberts – Lost 3/2

Men’s Master Pennant

The Men’s Master Pennant team played their first game of the year on Sunday 16th May, and what a spectacular match up against players from scratch to 4, from Lakeside.

Our No1 Player Charlie Kim was on fire with an early chip for birdie on 2nd before his opponent counterpunched with a 2 foot tap in birdie on the 4th. They both fought hard with Charlie 1 up on turn and 3 under par off the stick and Charlie eventually winning 2&1.

Everyone played to a high standard with most playing against players on half their handicap.

Impressive golf from Steve Doherty and Mike McKechnie, who came away with comfortable wins.

A great effort from Gilbert Im fresh off his NB Charlton win and playing his first Master Pennant match pushing his opponent (a 1 marker) all the way to the 17th Hole.

Player of the day Simon Perry cluthced victory from the jaws of defeat, going down the 17th hole 1 down, and hitting in the trees on the right hadn side. With no regards for his clubs, and with his ball behind the trunk of a tree giving him virtually no follow through, Simon smashed a 4 iron into the tree trunk propellin his ball just short of the green before chipping dead and then hitting it close on 18 to win the match and give the team a draw for our first match of the season.

Great effort everyone and lets go one better on Sunday!

Master Pennants Captain/Manager
