From the Course
Rainfall for the Week: 6.0mm, Rainfall for 2023: 623.5mm, Dam: 90% Green Speed: 9.5 feet
Mother Nature is starting to play her part in proceedings with a warm weekend ahead and the overnight temperatures also on the rise. The coverage on fairways is improving everyday with the cutting height down to the usual 13mm. Fairways have been mown twice this week and we are starting to see some definition between the fairways, and the surrounds.
Chemical applications to greens to protect them against pests and diseases increase from this time of year through until early Autumn. As growth of the turf on our playing surfaces increases, so does pest activity and favourable conditions for disease development. We follow a preventative management strategy to control these pests and diseases by controlling populations before they reach or exceed threshold levels and therefore damage our playing surfaces. Members will see our spray cart out on greens before play applying different chemicals, as well as fertilisers and soil health tonics to strengthen the turf naturally, and beneficial bacteria’s which are applied to combat the bad pathogens within the turf/soil ecosystem.
The team has started patching some of the green edges which were affected by herbicide overspray during the winter. The turf being used to patch the green edges is being taken from the nursery green behind the 11th green. Once this patching work is completed, we will be stripping all of the nursery green and reseeding this green to return it to a practice green for members to chip and putt on.
Spring time is also bloom time in the gardens, and young Sam is doing a great job with the gardens around the clubhouse and proshop. He has worked very hard in the gardens on course throughout the winter months, and they are all adding to the experience as members play at this time of year.
A smaller than normal crew of volunteers again this week but plenty of tasks were still completed. Assistance with the clean up of the fallen tree on the 16th hole, spreading new mulch between the 13th and 17th fairways, tidying up the 6th creek, poison painting the Parramatta Grass and clubhouse maintenance work. Graeme Hennessy has also been coming in and spraying the lemon trees down near the toilet block on the course. He is using natural products, so members are still welcome to pick a lemon or two as they pass through. Thank you to everyone that volunteered their time to the Club and course this week, it is very much appreciated by everybody. If anyone would like to join our merry band of volunteers we would love to see some new blood to join our stalwarts!
Greens will be cut on Saturday and Sunday this weekend.
Have a great weekend and happy golfing!
The Course Team.
