Junior Development Fundraising Golf Day – Monday 12th June 2023 – Limited Space Available
OGC’s annual Junior Development Fundraising Golf Day is being held on Monday 12th June and all members are encouraged to consider joining in and inviting guests along to help make this important day a success.
The Club’s Junior Development Programme (JDP) has over 90 active kids who are provided clinics and coaching by Jeremy Ward, David Ecob, and Max Dakic across 10 clinic sessions a week, each school term.
This junior programme is one of the largest and most active in Sydney, and in recent years, under the guidance of Jeremy Ward, has seen the programme evolve to a point where the Club now has almost 40 boys and girls with GA handicaps and 9 boys and girls, 16 years or younger, with single figure handicaps.
This programme is fantastic for the future of the Club’s membership, but also fantastic for the kids who have the opportunity to take part, with golf a game for life that teaches our kids valuable life lessons, along with the rules and etiquette that are an integral part of our great game.
The Junior Development Fundraising Golf Day is a key part of the funding of this tremendous programme, with all proceeds going back into the programme which costs approximately $40k per annum to implement. The event format is a 4 person ambrose at a 7am shotgun start followed by a light lunch and presentation. The day will see many of our JDP members taking part and engaging with participants on the golf course throughout the day.
Members who are unable to participate in the event can still support the JDP and High Performance Squad by making a tax deductible donation to the programme through the Australian Sports Foundation via the link below;

From the Course
Rainfall for the Week: 5.5mm, Rainfall for 2023: 533.0mm, Dam: 100% Green Speed: 10.0 feet
The final bunker of this seasons bunker work was completed this week ending the bunker rejuvenation project. This bunker rejuvenation program was started in September 2020 after the Club was successful with an insurance claim for water inundation from a heavy rainfall event in February 2020. In total, 39 bunkers were rejuvenated over the 3 summer seasons whilst staff still maintained the course to required standards. Bad weather and COVID have interrupted these works at times, but it is a great achievement by all staff members involved, both past and present, and one that the members should appreciate.
The fertiliser application to all fairways last week has started to have a positive affect with a noticeable colour improvement and a slight increase in growth on these surfaces this week. A herbicide application to control Winter Grass in our collars, aprons and bunker surrounds has begun this week, and will be finished next week. As always, this application is a delicate operation as we are trying to control a weed in our couch areas, which is one of two grass species in our greens!
The sorting and removal of waste material from the stockpile on the 8th flyover is almost complete, with work on the improvement of the entire 8th flyover area beginning next week. The improvement works will involve the whole 8th flyover being rotary hoed to begin with before the stockpiled material is brought across for spreading and shaping to improve the appearance of this area. A new Geohex path will also be installed through this flyover so that carts will have a smooth drive and wear will be reduced. Once all the earth works are completed, this area will be turfed with kikuyu to ensure a quick coverage is obtained.
Our volunteers were on course on Monday morning, performing a bunker run before the competition, edging paths, weeding the 6th tee gardens, and adding sand to the exit path of the 1st tee. Thank you for your contribution gentlemen, the course staff and your fellow members appreciate all your efforts every week!
Greens will be cut on Saturday and Sunday, with only the dew being removed from them on Monday. Have a great weekend!

Captain’s Corner – Local Rules
The general Rules of Golf are clearly set out in the Official Rules of Golf and are determined by the R&A in conjunction with the USGA.
Depending on circumstances that may exist at some courses, the Club Committee has the authority to introduce, via the Model Local Rules, certain changes to the Rules of Golf, but only if they are consistent with the policies established.
These Local Rules must be made available to all members, for example on the back of a scorecard, on the noticeboard or website.
At Oatlands, we have Local Rules that may only apply on particular days and as such are available on the daily Noticeboard.
More permanent Local Rules are available on the website, the back of the score card, or more accessible to the majority of players, on the MiScore App.
When you open the MiScore App you will see a menu on the top right hand side of the screen. If you press the menu button it will open up a number of options available to you. Towards the bottom of the page there is an option “Local Rules”. By pressing the Local Rules, all the Club’s local rules will appear which will assist players if required to clarify ruling that are covered by the Local Rules.
Can I please encourage players to access this link to not only make players aware of the Local Rules but apply these rules when required.

Pennant Update
Ladies Silver Shield
The OGC ladies travelled to Elanora today to take on Bayview GC in the final match of the 2023 Silver Shield.
It was a very successful day with our ladies winning their match 5-0 to finish equal on wins and points with Avondale GC and share the Siler Shield Pennant for 2023.
The match result against Bayview today were as follows;
- Paula Skelton 4&2
- Julia Yang 6&5
- Jenny Doherty 8&7
- Leonie Guthrie 1up
- Amanda Walkerden 4&2
The other OGC ladies that represented the club across the course of the 7 fixtures were;
Stephanie Monaghan, Justa Kim and Jenny Paerk.
Well done ladies on a fantastic effort and another pennant win reecored in the long history of Oatlands Golf Club.
Master Pennant
Last week we were up against Macquarie Links (at OGC) who would be one of the strongest teams in the entire competition, boasting four players under 1 handicap.
It was a must win match and we almost got there.
Charlie led out playing number 1 and played some great golf against a very good player holing a monster putt to close his match 3&1 (see video).
Linda was once again up against a player with lots of experience losing to a good downhill putt on the last hole.
Janaka played a very close match looking like being down when his opponent rolled in a 40-foot putt for birdie on our 4th but calmly rolled his 30 footer for a fantastic birdie and to halve the hole, which changed the match, and then was able to close the match out with a good 2&1 win.
Stephen Doherty took his match to the final hole before holing his putt for the win.
The remaining matches see-sawed back and forth with Macquarie Links tail being too strong winning the remaining matches.
Plenty of positive comments from Macquarie on the excellent condition of Oatlands golf course and a match played in good spirit.
We wish Macquarie links the best in their final matches and now need to focus hard to secure our final 2 matches.
Results
- Charlie Kim – Won 3&1
- Linda Gyzen – 1down
- Janaka Wimalaratne – Won 2&1
- Stephen Doherty – 1up
- Dave Osborne – Lost 2&1
- Mike McKechnie – Lost 3&2
- Russell Brooks – Lost 4&3
- Jack Chang -Lost 3&2

Interclub Pennant
The Interclub team played its sectional final against Cromer at Oatlands on Sunday morning, hoping for a convincing win to keep the confidence high and to qualify for the semi-final in a couple of weeks. The team once again did the Club proud with a 6/2 victory, although it was much tighter than the score suggests with four matches going the distance. We now move our focus to the semi-final which will be played at Concord GC against The Australian GC in two weeks time (Sunday 25th June at 8:28am).
Individual results were:
- Grant Lomas – Lost 2dn
- Luke Mason – Won 6/4
- Tom McMurtry – Lost 5/4
- Jimmy Hawach – Won 1up
- Blair McDonald – Won 2 up
- Earl Rees – Won 1 up
- James Roberts – Won 4/3
- Mark Robinson – Won 2/1
