From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 0.0mm,  Rainfall for 2023: 527.5mm, Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 11.0 feet

“The End is Near” for the course team in relation to the bunker rejuvenation program after the middle bunker at the front of the 13th green was completed. This bunker was a real team effort with a total of 8 staff members working side by side for the majority of Tuesday to get the lining part of the work completed while we were able to have the hole closed. Having the hole closed enables the team to work more efficiently by not having to stop and start throughout the day when members are hitting shots into the green, which then also makes it much safer for staff to perform this work.

The placing and spreading of sand will be completed on Friday, and this only leaves the left hand side bunker at this green to complete the project. This has been a huge project for the course team to complete whilst also performing the regular maintenance of the course. Along the way we have had reduced staff numbers, a pandemic, supply issues, and the highest rainfall totals in a calendar year for 30 years. When the decision was made for the course team to perform the work, there was a cost saving initially, but the main issue was getting the work completed to the required standard that would see this work last a long time. We learnt from previous work performed on the bunkers by contractors, that shortcuts can be taken which inevitably led to the bunkers deteriorating quicker than expected. By performing the work ourselves, we have had full control over the quality of work, and the standard hasn’t dropped from the first bunkers we started on the 4th hole until we complete the last bunker next week (weather permitting).

All fairways have been fertilised this week to gain the last available growth on these surfaces before the weather turns cold. The colour in these surfaces brightened up almost immediately once the fertiliser was washed in with the irrigation. Our greens remain healthy and look great after an iron based fertiliser application earlier this week. The blowers and vacuum have once again been busy this week cleaning up as much of the deciduous leaf debris before the weekend.

Our volunteers were on course on Monday morning, performing a bunker run before the competition, trimming fairway sprinkler heads, edging paths, trimming and clearing drainage pits, replacing worn practice nets, and installing a new sensor light outside the Pro Shop. Thank you once again gentlemen for a fabulous effort and we look forward to seeing you all out and about on the course!

Greens will be cut on Saturday and dew will be removed from them on Sunday.

Have a great weekend!

The Course Team

Pre-order Lunch before Shotgun Starts to Save Time

With the upcoming commencement of Saturday Shotgun Starts through June and July, members are reminded that they can pre-order their lunch from the Sandwich Hut by completing an order slip that is available from the Pro Shop prior to play.

With approximately 100 players finishing the morning shotgun at the same time that the afternoon players are arriving, the congestion at the Sandwich Hut can cause lengthy delays for member lunch orders, and pre-ordering circumvents these delays by allowing the catering staff to prepare your order before golfers leave the course.

Pre-order slips can be collected and returned at the Pro Shop prior to the commencement of the shotgun start.

Junior Development Fundraiser Golf Day – Monday 12th June 2023

The Club is pleased to announce that the annual JDP Fundraiser will proceed as planned this year on Monday of the Queen’s birthday long weekend.

The Club’s Junior Development Programme has over 90 active kids who are provided clinics and coaching by Jeremy Ward, David Ecob, and Max Dakic across 10 clinic sessions a week each school term.

This junior programme is one of the largest and most active in Sydney, and in recent years, under the guidance of Jeremy Ward, has seen the programme evolve to a point where the Club now has almost 40 boys and girls with GA handicaps and 9 boys and girls, 16 years or younger, with single figure handicaps.

This programme is fantastic for the future of the Club’s membership, but also fantastic for the kids who have the opportunity to take part, with golf a game for life that teaches our kids valuable life lessons, along with the rules and etiquette that are an integral part of our great game.

The Junior Development Fundraiser Golf Day is a key part of the funding of this tremendous programme, with all proceeds going back into the programme which costs approximately $40k per annum to implement. Members are encouraged to book in (guests are welcome) for the 4 person ambrose at a 7am shotgun start followed by a light lunch and presentation. The day will see many of our JDP members taking part and engaging with participants on the golf course throughout the day. This is a great way for members to support our enviable junior programme and the future of the Club.

Members can also sponsor holes for this event with sponsorship tax deductible through the Australian Sport Foundation.

For more information, please email Club General Manager, Sam Howe, gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au.

Hole Sponsorship includes signage on a hole and in the clubhouse for the duration of the event, and recognition of the sponsorship in the Club Enews.

Pennant Update

Ladies Silver Shield

Late addition; The OGC ladies travelled to Wakehurst today and returned to the winners circle with a tight win over Manly GC, 3-2.

Master Pennant

Last week we played Macquarie links who are one of the strongest teams in any division so we always had a tough task in front of us, unfortunately coming away with a 6 to 2 loss.

Both Russ and Mike were sacrificed to the lions up front against scratch golfers but gained fantastic experience throughout. They never stopped trying with both making ground on their opponents after nervous starts.

My match is what match play is about. I played a very strong player who was a far better golfer by never giving up despite an ugly start and the odd duff and wrong fairway, was able to keep bouncing back with birdies and pars to come away with the win.

Amy started strong by making a birdie on the second hole which is the 2nd hardest hole on the course and raced to a lead at halfway but unfortunately found some treacherous deep bunkers which proved impossible to get out of and an opponent that turned the gas up on the back nine with a string of pars. Still a great effort with an opponent off a 2 handicap.

Dave played his standard keep in play and never gave the opposition a break to win 2 up.

Linda and Steve both had strong opposition and Jack struck the wrong opponent on a good day.

Next week we get to redeem ourselves at home and hopefully come away with a win with the return of Charlie and Janaka.

Results

  1. Russell Brooks – Loss 5&4
  2. Mike McKechnie – Loss 4&3
  3. Rod Butcher – Win 4&2
  4. Amy Kim – Loss 4&2
  5. Dave Osborne – Win 3&1
  6. Linda Gyzen – Loss 6&5
  7. Stephen Doherty – Loss 4&2
  8. Jack Chang – Loss 5&4

Interclub Pennant

The Interclub team travelled to the Elanora Country Club for their third round match against Cromer and to hopefully secure a spot in the sectional final. A win or a half would get us through or if Elanora beat St Michaels, we would also go through.

With our number 1, 2 and 6 winning well, it was down to Mark at number 8 and Blair at number 5 to try and secure a victory up the 18th. Unfortunately, things didn’t go our way and we lost the match 4.5/3.5. Luckily, Elanora beat St Michaels which meant Oatlands go through to the sectional final as the number 1 qualifier where we play Cromer at Oatlands this Sunday.

Individual Results were

  • Grant Lomas – Won 3/2
  • Luke Mason – Won 3/2
  • Ian Priest – Lost 5/3
  • Budd Frome – Lost 6/5
  • Blair McDonald – Lost 1 dn
  • Earl Rees – Won 3/1
  • Ed McCann – Lost 2/1
  • Mark Robinson – Halved
  • Blair McDonald
