From the Course
Rainfall for the Week: 1.5mm, Rainfall for 2022: 1,967.5mm Dam: 100% Green Speed: 10 feet
Mother Nature threw a different challenge at the team this week with the strong winds on Tuesday and Wednesday causing planned applications of growth regulator to fairways and roughs to have to be rescheduled. These spray applications will now be performed early next week, weather permitting. These winds removed the high humidity that we were experiencing last week, which has also meant the surge in growth that we saw in the fairways and roughs, has settled down as well, making it less critical to complete the growth regulator application this week.
The strong winds, along with sunny skies also dries out the greens faster, so team members have had to probe greens more regularly this week, with hand watering of any low reading areas required to ensure the putting surfaces stay as stress free as possible.
Members playing in the Wednesday competition would have noticed the course team laying the Zoysia turf around the 1st greenside bunkers. Whilst it wasn’t ideal to get this delivery on Wednesday, team members stayed back to lay all the turf out around these bunkers to ensure this turf had the best chance to establish. This showed great dedication by all team members involved. Turf will now be ordered for the fairway bunker surrounds which should be completed within the next fortnight.
The Club was able to obtain some free Santa anna couch during the week and taking advantage of this, the team quickly stripped the 11th women’s tee pad on Tuesday and replaced it with this free turf. With the weather warming up now, this couch turf should establish quickly, so a temporary tee will be in place for a short time until this turf takes root.
Our volunteers were on course Monday morning raking bunkers, trimming the hedges at the 6th tee, tidying up around Farmer Tunks Hut, trimming tree suckers, and repairing the lifted rubber tiles at the front clubhouse entrance. Thank you gentlemen for all your assistance once again this week!
Have a great weekend!

Oatlands Cup – Saturday 26th November 2022
The Oatlands Cup is the Club’s annual Golf NSW Vardon event. In recent years, Covid has restricted the event to members only.
2022 will see the return of the visiting golfers who are restricted to a handicap of 4.4 or less.
The Oatlands Cup is open for Oatlands members playing on a handicap of 9.4 or less.
Entry is $80pp for visitors and $40pp for members.
To facilitate the event without members not eligible based on handicap, the day will run as an AM and PM shotgun start, with the Oatlands Cup played during the AM shotgun start only.
Members wishing to play can book via the Club website now, with entries closing at 5pm on Thursday 18th November, prior to the general timesheet of the day opening.
Veterans Closing Day
The ladies held their Annual Veterans Closing Day on Monday 31st October and had a a wonderful day of golf and friendship as the formal golfing programme winds down for 2022. Despite an early hiccup when MiClub (Club’s website provider) went down nationally resulting in no scorecards and handicap at the beginning of play, our ladies set out with their usual enthusiasm and joy for a day on the course.
The 2Ball Teams event was won by Jenny Petherbridge & Jill Davey with 46 points from runners up, Barbra Beasley & Jan Rogers with 43 points.
Linda Bestford – Hole in One
Oatlands Member, Linda Bestford recorded a hole in one on the 9th hole during her quarter-final match of the ladies championships on Thursday 27th October. What made this hole in one slightly different was that Head Professional, Jeremy Ward, was on hand to see the reaction as Linda retrieved the ball and video’d the response.
Well done Linda! Rumour has it that it was one of the best celebrated Hole in Ones at OGC for some time!
Single Use Plastic Bags Banned – Bring your own Cooler Bag for Ice
Members are advised, that as of 1st November, Single-use plastic items are now banned in NSW, with environmental campaigners welcoming the move as a major win for birds and marine life. Once commonplace items including plastic straws, plates, plastic-stemmed cotton buds, cups and personal care products with microbeads are now outlawed in NSW.
As a result of this, members wishing to get ice from the Club to take out onto the golf course, will need to bring there own re-usable bags or Eskies.
Harrison Crowe’s Shot to the 18th at St Andrews
An Australian golfer, who went viral this year after hitting an unbelievable trick shot from outside a pub onto the 18th green at St Andrews, has qualified for next year’s US Masters and British Open.
Harrison Crowe, 21, won the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship on Sunday with an even-par final round of 72 at the Amata Spring Country Club in Thailand. It means the precocious Australian amateur has qualified for the Masters at Augusta National in April, as well as the British Open in July.
The creator of the video had heard a story that South African golfer Ernie Els once hit a shot at 4am from the Dunvegan Hotel, about a three-minute walk from the course, over buildings on the street and onto the 18th green at the Old Course.
Crowe happened to be in the pub with mates when he was dared to try and replicate the audacious shot.
The first shot he attempted was off a tee and went a little right. On the next attempt, Crowe hit the ball off the concrete and onto the green.
Crowe and his mates walked straight back into the pub before the youngster then inspected the green to check where the shot landed.
