From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 1.0mm,  Rainfall for 2022: 1,668.5mm Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 9 feet

What a great week it has been on the course with great weather enabling playing surfaces to dry out nicely to allow full cart use by members on Thursday and allowing course staff to complete various tasks around the course. The dry sunny weather conditions have been beneficial for our putting greens, with their appearance improving as the week has gone on.

New Zoysia turf has been laid around the 13th bunker this week, drainage and linings have been installed and sand will be added before the weekend. The usual process will follow with staff using our plate compactor to firm the sand throughout the bunker, then a suitable time to allow the sand to settle before this bunker is brought back into play. The Zoysia turf will take some time to establish or take root, with this expected to take between 2 to 3 months. In the meantime, staff must be conscious to keep this turf well-watered, so that the establishment isn’t affected in any way.

A small drainage task is being performed on the right hand side of the 16th flyover in preparation of installing a new product called Geohex, over the worn track through the trees in this same area. We first must address the wet and boggy area, by installing sub-surface drainage to remove surface water before it reaches this area. Once the sub-surface drainage is completed, the worn track area will be prepared and levelled before the Geohex plastic material is laid down and filled with blue metal. We have purchased 160m2 of this product, and we plan to make the path 2 metres wide, so we will have 80m of this worn path covered.

Our Volunteers were back on Monday morning performing a bunker run before the ladies shotgun start, continued to clear the under growth on the left hand side of the 15th hole, edging pathways, and installing three new mats down on the practice range. As always, thanks gentlemen for another productive mornings work!

Enjoy the weekend!

Biannual Course Renovation – 15th – 17th August inclusive

Members are advised that the Club’s biannual Course Renovation is scheduled for Monday 15th – Wednesday 17th August inclusive.

With the extreme weather of the last 5-6 months, it has never been more important to undertake a full course renovation. This renovation is, to a degree, reliant on suitable weather conditions, and as such there is a possibility the intended schedule may be extended at short notice to ensure a full renovation is possible. The renovation in Autumn was comprised by weather, and given the stress the golf course has been under, it is vitally important the upcoming renovation is completed in full.

All Club facilities (including Clubhouse, Admin, Pro Shop, Practice Facilities) will be closed during the renovation.

Captain’s Corner – Course Care – Hole of the Day

With a decent break in the weather and some continuity on the golf course this past week, it is a good time to remind members of a long-standing initiative that the course has had in effect, being:

Course Care Hole of the Day

Every day, our course maintenance team rotate the Course Care Hole of the Day and place out signage (as shown adjacent) asking members to please repair extra divots and pitchmarks. Our golf course sees 4,000 – 5,000 rounds of golf a month played in good weather, and if 4,000 – 5,000 golfers fixed an extra pitch mark or divot on each Course Care Hole of the Day the difference to the golf course would be tangible.

Please help our Course Staff by taking a little extra care on the designated Course Care Hole of the Day.

Men’s Foursomes Championship

The 36 Hole Foursomes Championship was played on Saturday July 30th, after an all too common of late postponement from May, due to the wet weather.

The winners on the day of the Don Foreman and Dick Peet Trophies were both successful title defenses, with Brad Hooper & Wil Reece again winning the Don Foreman 36 Hole Gross with a score of 145 over, Runners Up Luke Mason & Grant Lomas with a score of 147.

David Gaffaney & Danny Joukhadar retained the Dick Peet 36 Hole Nett with a score of 141 on a countback after a 3 way tie with the gross event winners and runners up leaving the final runner up prize to Stephen Doherty & Janaka Wimalaratne with a nett score of 143.

Congratulations to all winners!

Ladies Interclub with Pennant Hills GC – Monday 1st August

The OGC Ladies hosted our Pennant Hills neighbours on Monday 1st August with over 100 ladies from both Clubs taking part in the 8:30am shotgun start.

The recent wet weather held off and allowed a great day of golf for all involved in the 4BBB format.

The OGC ladies won the day 15.5 matches to 9.5.

Tips with Jeremy – The One Arm Drill

OGC PGA Professional gives us a useful drill for preventing a slice and the over the top club plane that causes the majority of golfers difficulties.

To book a lesson with Jeremy or any of the OGC PGA Professionals, please contact the Golf Shop or visit the Club’s website.

Callaway Fitting Day – Tuesday 9th August – 2 Spaces Left

The OGC Pro Shop, in-conjunction with Callaway Golf, will be hosting a Callaway Fitting Day on Tuesday 9th August.

These Fitting Days are always very popular and a great way to ensure your next, Driver, Fairways, Hybrids, and / or Irons, match your swing.

Bookings are available via the Pro Shop or via the online timesheet listed on 9th August.

OGC Staff running City 2 Surf to raise money for Spinal Cord Injuries Australia

Oatlands staff members Jonny Chin, Karah Chapman and Hannah Skuodos, will be running in the annual iconic City 2 Surf on Sunday 14th August.

In-conjunction, Jonny will be raising money for Spinal Cord Injuries Australia, a fantastic organisation that does a lot of good for vulnerable people.

Members who would like to support the fundraising can do so via the link below.
