From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 5.0mm,  Rainfall for 2022: 1,305.0   Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 9.5 feet

Some much needed wind arrived this week which has helped to dry our playing surfaces. The strong winds didn’t cause any damage regarding fallen branches, but the course was littered with leaf debris. This is a small price to pay if it means the course gets the benefit of drier surfaces to play on. The blowers and vacuum were busy on the course all day Thursday, with several team members also on hand rakes to get the course tidied up as quickly as possible.

The team has been able to continue working on the bunker rejuvenation project this week, with the lining and drainage all installed in the left hand side bunker on the 2nd hole, and work in the middle bunker on this hole also started. This only leaves the team with the middle bunker and the right hand side bunker to complete for this season, which considering we’ve had to deal with 15 weeks of interruptions from the rain, has been a great effort by the team! Once we get these two bunkers lined, and sand installed to these three bunkers and the last one on the 11th, we will turn our attention to repairing the bunker on the 13th hole.

All tees and tee surrounds were mown this week to tidy them up one last time before the winter, all creeks and ponds, and protective screens were trimmed, and another cycle of tree base trimming was started this week to keep all these areas neat and tidy.

We are planning to dust all greens early next week which is simply a very light topdressing of sand across the putting surfaces. This process will have very minimal disruption to the putting surface and will improve the speed and trueness of our greens.

Our volunteers were on course Monday morning, preparing bunkers for the Monday competition, performing safety work to our practice nets, trimming the hedges at the 4th and 6th tees, and performing maintenance tasks in the clubhouse.

Thank you gentlemen for all your help once again this week!

Have a good weekend,

The Course Team.

Labour Impact on Club Operation – Catering

Oatlands Golf Club has been relatively unaffected by the well reported labour shortages around the country and across all industries (particularly hospitality) at the moment, and since the 2021 Covid lockdown. Part of this is through good management and part of it is good fortune, with some key roles filled prior to the current labour squeeze and very low staff attrition post the 2021 lockdown.

Unfortunately, the area we have been hit the hardest in is the kitchen, with Chef Andrew not having any luck finding the final staff member he requires.

We have been actively looking to recruit a kitchen hand, apprentice, or sandwich maker since November, and have had countless interviewees not turn up, multiple people accept a role and then not show up for their first shift, and even a few start work and then not show up after a day or two (the latter has occurred again this week).

Going forward, this shortage of labour in the kitchen should have minimal impact, however, to be safe and to ensure we don’t risk burning out the staff we have, we will temporarily stop offering the bistro / blackboard menu on Monday’s in favour of keeping the sandwich hut open, and will also offer a few hot options (such as soups) from the Sandwich hut on Monday’s.

We apologise for this inconvenience, and hope to return to normal / full service in due course.

Thank you for your understanding.

Superpin Jackpot – Wednesday 1st June to Wednesday 8th June

Unfortunately, last Wednesday 1st June, the Super Pin marker got blown away in strong winds and we were unable to ascertain a fair winner.

We did have a member in the afternoon record a shot which was written down on their own piece of paper, and a number of members email in distances, however, that does not tell us if anyone else was closer during the day. This situation has occurred once before in the last 4 years, and the solution agreed by the Match Committee was that the Superpin money should be placed on top of the following week’s Superpin to create a jackpot and determine the fairest winner.

As such, the Superpin prize of $266 from Wednesday 1st June, will be added to the Superpin pool for this coming Wednesday 8th June.

Getting Started Programme – Only a Few Spots Left

Sunday Programme – Fully Booked / Thursday Programme – Limited Spots Available

As members of Oatlands Golf Club, we all know the joys (and occasional frustration) of a game of golf. Being outdoors with friends, hitting a well-timed shot, sinking a long putt, breaking your handicap, and then going home to regale every shot to anyone who will listen, are all parts of this great game that we have in common.

For people new to golf, or thinking about giving it a try, the pathway to these experiences begins with learning to hit the golf ball, and at the beginning, that process and the journey to getting onto the golf course, can be quite intimidating.

The Club’s Getting Started Programme is perfect for these people to start their golfing journey and the gentle guidance of our experienced PGA Professionals.

Details of our next Getting Started Programme is outlined below:

FAQ
