Membership Joining Fees to Increase 1st October 2022

With the 2022-23 Membership renewal finalised on 15th May, the Club is pleased to announce that as of this week, our Full-Playing membership category is once again at capacity (500 members) and a waitlist is again in place. The Club currently has limited spaces remaining in the 6-Day and Lifestyle categories. This is a fantastic position for the Club to be in and provides a wonderful platform for the Club as we embark on the next chapter of the Club’s future and a new Clubhouse, with facilities that will be the envy of the Greater Sydney golf industry.

As such, the Membership Committee and Board have decided to raise the Joining Fees for Club membership, for each of the three playing categories, being:

  • Full (including Intermediate 1,2 & 3)
  • 6 Day
  • Lifestyle

The increase will be 30% on the current Entrance Fees, and will come into effect on 1st October 2022.

Any friend or family member that joins the Club prior to 1st October, (or in the case of Full Membership, places their name on the waitlist prior to 1st October), will only be required to pay the current Joining Fee, as listed below.

George Samios – Funeral Service

George Samios passed away on  the 13th of June aged 87 after succumbing to a stroke.  George was recognised by the Club with a medal for 60 years of membership last year, having joined Oatlands in 1961.  George served the Club as a volunteer and on various committees over the years and was well known to members old and new.

George’s family invites his fellow Oatlands golfers to his funeral at 11AM, Wednesday the 20th of June.  The funeral will be held at St John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church – 163 George Street, Parramatta (enter via Purchase Street).

Those attending the funeral will be invited to join the family afterwards for refreshments at Oatlands Golf Club to reflect on George’s life.

From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 0.0mm,  Rainfall for 2022: 1,306.0   Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 10.5 feet

A short week for the course team this week with the Queen’s birthday public holiday on Monday, but there has been plenty achieved nonetheless! It should also be noted that this is the first week since late February that no rainfall has been recorded for the week. I was asked whilst playing on Sunday, “how many days the course had been closed during the recent rain event”, it’s a good question, so I’ve checked back through the diary and, since Wednesday 23rd February (our first course closure):

• 114 days have past
• The course was closed on 46 days
• No carts for 30 days
• Medical carts only for 32 days
• Full carts for 6 days (which is over the last week since Saturday 11th June)

All greens were fertilised on Tuesday morning with a carbon based granular fertiliser that required watering in after being applied. To avoid irrigating greens surrounds which are still very moist, staff members watered in the fertiliser with hoses walking over each green at least 3 times. The greens have certainly darkened up in colour, and the carbon also feeds soil microbes which in turn unlock nutrients in the soil profile which are beneficial for healthy plant growth.

The first fungicide application to fairways for the winter period has been completed, with this being the first of possibly 3 or 4 applications to control the patch disease that is common in kikuyu fairways during the winter months, especially shaded areas. The team is also in the process of completing a pigment and fertiliser application to fairways for aesthetics and definition between playing surfaces.

Winter grass weeds are being treated in our Zoysia bunker surrounds with staff painting a low rate of glyphosate on individual plants with a weeding wand. This method is more labour intensive than blanket spraying these areas, but we are reducing the Zoysia turf’s exposure to herbicides over the winter months when growth of this turf species is reduced.

The bunkers on the 2nd hole will all have sand in them by the weekend completing this seasons’ work on the bunker rejuvenation program. We have started preparation work on the right hand side bunker at the 13th this week. All the surrounds of this bunker have been sprayed out with glyphosate to ensure the couch and kikuyu don’t start growing back through the new Zoysia. The team is going to remove all the sand, drainage, and old bunker lining in this bunker by hand, before reshaping the surrounds of this bunker to ensure that any runoff water is pushed around the bunker to reduce erosion of the sand in future rainfall events.

The team is receiving plenty of positive comments regarding the course conditions after all the recent rain and the increase in speed of our greens, which is always nice to hear. However, it’s very disappointing to see each morning many unrepaired pitch marks on greens and unfilled divots on fairways, with many members also expressing their frustration of poor course etiquette. The course team ask all members to fix their own plus a few more pitch marks on greens and divots on fairways, and encourage playing partners to also assist with this practice for the benefit of the course.

Our volunteers had the week off this week due to the public holiday.

I will be attending the the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association conference next week in Melbourne (including a game at Royal Melbourne on Monday), which is being held in conjunction with the Golf Managers Association conference for the first time, with Sam Howe (General Manager) and Karah Chapman (Clubhouse Manager) also attending. We will also be joined by Jack Parker (OGC Course 3IC) who has been nominated for the ASTMA National Graduate of the Year which will be presented at Monday nights Gala Dinner. We wish Jack all the best with this award!

Enjoy the Weekend
The Course Team.

Food and Beverage Price Increase – 1st July 2022

Members are advised that Club food and beverage pricing will be increasing by 5% on 1st July, in line with current inflation.

The will include:

  • All Beverage items
  • All Sandwich Hut items
  • All Daily Bar Menu items

The Bettington Restaurant (a la carte) will remain at $50 (two course) and $65 (three course) for the time being.

The Club has absorbed the majority of cost increases in the last two years as recognition of member support throughout the Covid lockdowns, however, the rate of wholesale price rises in recent months has necessitated the 1st July price increase.

Private event package prices will be increased by 10-15% to reflect the actual wholesale price rises impacting the hospitality industry and broader community.

Care for the Course – Bunkers

The image adjacent was taken by a member early afternoon during the week.

It goes without saying that this is more than an isolated incident of course care negligence, as the extent to which this bunker hasn’t been raked can’t be attributed to a single person.

We do not like using this Enews platform as a place to highlight unacceptable etiquette, but the impact of this type of negligence is on all members, the majority of whom take a great pride in their course and show respect for their fellow members.

Please take care of your course, and show your fellow members the respect they deserve by raking bunkers, filling divots, and repairing pitchmarks.

Course Super, Dom Yates, has recorded a short video below on the correct method for raking a bunker.

Ray Sleiman Hole in One – Monday 13th June

Oatlands member Ray Sleiman had the perfect start to his round on Monday (shotgun start) with an ace on his first shot of the day. Ray’s playing partners seemed more excited than Ray as the video shows, and Ray’s calm demeanour helped to record even par on the back 9 holes at OGC for the first time in his golfing career. Well done Ray!

Catering Pre-Orders on Saturday Shotgun Starts

Members playing in Saturday shotgun start events over winter are advised that the Club offers the chance to pre-order lunch from the Sandwich Hut or Daily Bar Menu, prior to heading out for the 7am shotgun start.

Pre-orders have long been a part of our Monday and Thursday shotgun starts, and provide members the chance to “beat the rush” of players all finishing at the same time having hit off together in the shotgun start format.

Members wishing to pre-order, simply complete an order at the Pro Shop prior to play, and the meals will then be ready for collection from the Sandwich Hut or Bar upon completion of your round.
