From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 21.0mm,  Rainfall for 2022: 1,270.0mm   Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 9.5 feet

After some reasonable weather over the weekend, the call was made to start the repair process of all our older bunkers. This work is labour intensive, having to scrape back the silt from off the top of the sand and then shovel it out into a waiting vehicle. We then hand weeded the remaining sand and blew out any leaf debris. Once all of this was completed, our old bunker bike was used to push sand from the bunker bases back up on to the faces where it had washed down from. Once the sand is spread evenly across the face it is compacted down to try and avoid balls plugging in these fresh faces, and then the bunker is prepared for play by brooming the faces and raking the bases. This whole process took 9 staff members and 8 hours to complete 17 bunkers!

All bunkers were back in play for the Wednesday competition except for the fairway bunkers on the 1st and 15th, front left on the 1st, and the front right on the 13th. This bunker on the 13th needs additional work performed to it as the grass surrounds in a section of this bunker has collapsed, so we need to ensure that this section is repaired correctly for member and staff safety. The team has dug out a section of the base in the front left bunker on the 1st to expose the drainage lines, which will then be backfilled with new sand to ensure this bunker drains more freely in the future.

Growth on our fairways, tees and roughs has slowed because of soil temperatures decreasing following the continued cloudy overcast days we have been experiencing. This means that cutting of these surfaces will be reduced, and the importance of filling any divots is increased as the grass will not just simply grow over or through this damage during the winter months. An application of green pigment and an iron based fertiliser has been applied to all tee pads and has been started on fairways, to keep as much colour in the surfaces over the winter period.

Members playing the course recently will have noticed the little mud piles throughout our tees, fairways and green surrounds playing surfaces. These are made by worms and are called castings, which are small mounds of worm excrement or poo. Because the soils are so waterlogged, air in the soil is reduced and this forces the worms to the surface where they leave these little mounds behind. Although unsightly and disruptive to playing surfaces, this is a sign of healthy soils containing organic materials. There is a chemical that controls the worms, but it is expensive and from an environmental and soil health point of view, not recommended, as worms are good for the soil.

I recently spoke with another local course Super, who was astounded that we had medical carts on the course, as they don’t even have 18 holes open at the moment, and there isn’t a hint of carts being allowed back on their course for some time yet. We should all be aware that as we are heading into the Winter months, the course isn’t going to dry out that much unless we get some sunny and windy days without further rain. That means that we are most likely looking at having medical carts on the course at best, and playing preferred lies for several months ahead, but this is going to be well ahead of many other courses in Sydney.

Only one volunteer (David Gaffaney) on course this week given the ANZAC Day public holiday on Monday, with some much needed attention being shown towards the practice nets. The edges of the impact nets have been cable tied back to the wire mesh, rubbish picked up, hedges weeded and trimmed back. Thanks for your assistance, Dave, it is very much appreciated.

Have a good weekend,

The Course Team.

What is Next for the Barty Party?

Ash Barty has revealed her next sporting career move, confirming she has agreed to play in a global golf tournament. Barty will headline the inaugural Icons Series in New Jersey in June, taking a spot in ‘The Rest of the World’ team alongside boxer Canelo Álvarez, Manchester City soccer manager Pep Guardiola and Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

The team will take on swimmer Michael Phelps, decorated quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and former professional boxer Oscar De La Hoya, all assigned to ‘Team USA’.

Barty, who shocked the world with her retirement from tennis last month, said she “can’t wait” to take to the Liberty National golf course. “I’m excited to be part of the Icons Series and I hope through my participation in the series that we can encourage more women and girls to participate in golf around the world,” she said. “It’s such a unique opportunity to have fun, test yourself and compete against the world’s greatest athletes in a sport that we are all so passionate about. “I can’t wait to experience Liberty National and learn from our iconic captain Ernie Els. I hope all the Aussie fans in New York and New Jersey come out to cheer us on.”

The former tennis star has also taken a stake in the new concept, which Icons Series chief executive, Thomas Brookes told the Nine newspapers she was keen to bring down under. “She’s absolutely terrific … I know she’s really, really excited to be playing in New York and she’s also really keen to bring the concept to Australia.”

The three-time grand slam champion handed the tennis world No.1 spot to Polish player Iga Świątek in March. Since her shock retirement, speculation has grown that she would take up another sport – either re-entering the cricket world, or following in the footsteps of her golfer fiancé Garry Kissick.

Barty snagged her first golf title since retiring from tennis in early April, taking home $30 in prize money at a local Brisbane tournament.
