Clubhouse Development Proposal – Online Voting

All members would be aware of the Clubhouse Development Proposal currently before the membership for approval.

Seven member Information Sessions have been conducted to date, with three more scheduled next week (Wednesday 24th November at 2pm and 6pm, and Thursday 25th November at 3pm). The Club are currently finalising details of additional sessions to be held online leading up to the General Meeting which will be communicated to members in the current week and provide those members who haven’t been able to attend one of the sessions at the Club the opportunity to see the presentation.

Following feedback from the Information Sessions so far, the Club will conduct the member vote to approve the Clubhouse Development via an online ballot to ensure all eligible voting members have the opportunity to cast their vote on the proposal.

The online voting portal, facilitated by a third party voting organisation that specialises in online voting, will be communicated to members early next week, with each voting member issued a unique voter code.

The Board encourages members to vote on the proposal. It is the view of the Board that the proposal negotiated provides a unique opportunity to replace the ageing clubhouse, and provide the resources to invest back into the golf course with the objective of making it the best members course in northwest Sydney.

From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 24.0mm,  Rainfall for 2021: 908.5mm   Dam: 95%   Green Speed: 10 feet

It’s been a busy week on the course as per usual, with the team managing to install the drainage and fabric lining in the LHS bunker on the 8th, with the sand to be completed by the weekend. When staff are performing this work in the future, we will be taking the hole out of play as a precaution for staff safety and to reduce player anxiety of hitting staff members which will increase the efficiency of the work as staff members won’t have to continually pause when players are hitting their shots around or over that bunker.

The course team has started cutting out sections of last years Zoysia bunker surrounds which have been affected by herbicide applications over the winter months. We were advised that the herbicide in question was safe to use on this turf type, but we have found out that this is not the case. Sections on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 15th bunkers will be replaced with new Zoysia, to have these bunker surrounds in the same condition that our most recently installed bunker surrounds are in. Areas on the 4th and 5th bunker surrounds have been sprayed with glyphosate, and these areas will also be replaced with Zoysia.

The renovation of tees has been completed with the fertiliser application being completed on Thursday morning. The collars and aprons will be fertilised next week, with this fertiliser to be watered in by staff using hoses to avoid over watering the putting surfaces. A backup miticide and fertiliser application to all our couch playing surfaces is also being performed this week.

Temperatures were high enough on Thursday and Friday for staff to continue spot spraying weeds and undesirable grasses in our couch tee complexes. The areas sprayed will yellow off for about a week and then the couch in these areas will return to its natural green colour while the weeds and grasses die off.

All surfaces remain in great condition with the mowers, blowers and vacuum on course everyday to stay on top of things. The aquatic weeds in the 9th and 13th ponds have been treated this week, so we should start to see these die back over the next few days.

Enjoy the weekend!

The Course Team.

Docket Signing and Cash Payment

As of Monday 22nd November, the Bar, Sandwich Hut, and Pro Shop will require members making purchases on their House Account or Bar Credit to sign the docket as proof of purchase.

This process was put on-hold at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic when NSW Health direction was to avoid communal touch points however, now that the State has exceeded 80% vaccination status, this direction is no longer in place and as such, signing of dockets will be re-instated as of Monday 22nd November.

Also, on Monday 22nd November, all areas of Club operation will once again accept cash payments. This has also been on hold since the beginning of the pandemic for the reasons listed above and is being re-instated due to the change of advice from NSW Health as a result of vaccinations.

Golf Lesson Practice Balls – Professional Staff Only

Following feedback from the membership that the use of white golf balls on the practice range for golf lessons was causing difficulties in locating errant shots from the 13th tee, the Club has purchased yellow lesson balls for our PGA staff to use. These are pictured below.

We ask members to please not remove these balls from the range as they have been implemented to reduce the impact of golf lessons on golfers on course, and unfortunately have been disappearing in large numbers.

We thank you for your co-operation and understanding.

Five after 5 is Back

The Club’s popular Five after 5 series are back again for 2021-22 with the four events scheduled for November 26, December 17, January 7 and 21. The timesheets to book for these are live on the Club’s website.

Mixed Pennant 2022 – Expressions of Interest

It is strange times when we are calling for expressions of interest for a pennant competition that has not been completed for the current year, but that is the case with the 2022 Mixed Pennant competition which due to Covid is still running in 2021 and has been scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2022.

Oatlands has a strong history in this event, including a runner-up finish to Ryde-Parramatta in 2020, and is again in the final of the 2021 pennant this coming Sunday.

Any members wishing to take part in the 2022 squad should email the General Manager, Sam Howe, at gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au by no later than 5pm on Friday 26th November. All EOIs will be forwarded to team managers Debbie Jepson and Peter Crawford for consideration.

Rules Corner – Playing from Compulsory GUR – What is the Penalty?

The Club has received a Rules question regarding what happens if you accidently play a shot from compulsory GUR.

Scenario: A player’s tee shot on a par 3 finishes in a greenside bunker that is compulsory GUR, and has a dropping stake as an additional option for relief. The player plays from the bunker to within a meter from the hole.

What would be the player’s score in the following 3 scenarios.

  1. The player holes out and goes to the next tee where a fellow player tells him about the compulsory GUR. He continues playing at the next hole.
  2. Before putting on the green he is told of the GUR. He lifts his ball, drops at the dropping stake and holes out with two more strokes.
  3. The player holes out and is told of the GUR. He then drops at the stake and holes out for two more strokes.

Answers:

  1. Score = 5: 3 strokes plus 2 Penalty Strokes for a Breach of Local Rule.
  2. Score = 8: 4 strokes plus 2 Penalty Strokes for a Breach of Local Rule plus 2 Penalty Strokes for playing from a Wrong Place (Rule 14.7) when he lifted ball and went to the dropping stake.
  3. Score 5 = Same as scenario 1. When the player holed out the first time the hole was complete and the action of going to the dropping stake was irrelevant.
