From the Course
Rainfall for the Week: 0.0mm, Rainfall for 2021: 544.0mm Dam: 100% Green Speed: Renovations
This week, the team has been continuing work on the bunker rejuvenation project. Both bunkers on 7th hole have now been filled with sand. This sand now requires time to settle down. This will be assisted through watering and wheel rolling ahead of being brought back into play. This has allowed us to move on to the bunkers on 15th with the team preparing the front bunker ahead of it being filled with sand by Friday. This will leave only the back bunker on the 15th which will then see us pause the bunker project until the warm weather and growing season returns as this is required to ensure the Zoysia turf establishes.
Our greens have come back very well following the recent renovation and it is hard to believe the renovation was only completed 17 days ago. The application of fungicides mixed with soil and plant fertiliser have been sprayed so the greens are set to head into winter in very good shape given the traffic over the last 12 months.
The course irrigation system has had some upgrade work performed this week with all satellites box controllers now “talking” to one another and able to be controlled remotely. Prior to this, a number of boxes had to be plugged and unplugged manually to moderate the application of water, not a simple thing if the weather forecast is wrong and changes need to be made in the middle of the night.
Members will notice the waste pile on the RHS of the 8th tee has been screened. This is not a permanent solution to this area with the organic and soil waste to be utilised in other areas of the property in due course, however a waste area in this section of the golf course is required while projects like bunker rejuvenation are still underway and as such, this area has been screened to improve the aesthetics in the short term.
All fairways have been verti drained this week. The team will be applying granular fertiliser over the next 1-2 weeks to ensure the grass reaps the benefit of the warm weather before winter is upon us.
All surfaces have been cut once this week. Fairways have been cut twice. The team have been busy trimming around tree bases and spraying weeds in gardens, (checking bunkers for weeds as well). Bare patches recently turfed by volunteers have also been getting some TLC with the turf quality in the second batch below the standard of the first batch due to flooding at Sydney turf nurseries. These areas will recover in due course.
Have great weekend everyone!
The Course Team
Staff Profile – Dominic Yates (Course Superintendent)
“I have been working at Oatlands Golf Club for 11 years, starting as Assistant Superintendent before moving into the Course Superintendent role 4 years ago. I’ve always worked on golf courses since starting my apprenticeship at Massey Park Golf Course. I have also worked at Barnwell Park Golf Course, Woodville Golf Course and Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club.
I love playing golf, which helps with the job at times. My handicap is around 4 or 5, and I usually get a game in once a fortnight either on a Saturday or a Sunday (sometimes both!) finding a spot somewhere in the field, which is a good way of getting to know all the members. I luckily get the opportunity to play some great courses having played NSW GC, Peninsula Kingswood, Commonwealth, Metropolitan and The Lakes. I recently won our annual NSW Golf Course Superintendents golf championships at The Lakes!
I have two great kids, Declan 14 and Tahlia 11. Declan plays soccer and the guitar while Tahlia is a netballer and swimmer. We are very passionate Melbourne Storm supporters and have travelled down for a few home games over the years. I started my own tradition whenever the Storm made a grand final, so my art works have gotten pretty good with plenty of practice over the years!”
US Masters Breakfast – Matsuyama and Wheat don the Green Jacket
OGC held its annual US Masters Breakfast on Monday. This event, which is one of the most popular and exciting on the OGC calendar, has had a bumpy ride in recent years with Covid changing the telecast times in 2020 and weather changing the telecast times in 2019.
Happily, the 2021 event had no unexpected telecast changes and allowed over 120 members and guests to enjoy another fascinating Masters finish and a historic win by Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama.
The US Masters coverage and breakfast was followed by a full field shotgun start and 18 hole stableford for the OGC Green Jacket.
Scoring was difficult on the Tiger Tee set course with two players finishing tied on 38 points with Kelvin Wheat (pictured) defeating Mark Irwin on a countback to win the Club’s coveted Green Jacket for 2021 and join the esteemed list of past winners which is a who’s who of world Oatlands golf.

Caption Competition – Responses and Winner
What can I say!!! If my ego needed a check, (and some might say mine does) then putting a photo of yourself standing in a bin and then asking over 1,000 members if they’d like to comment is a good place to start.
I will say, we have a very, very funny group of members. It is a shame I can’t put all the responses in this Enews with almost 90 responses and at least half of them PG, but here is a list of favorites;
- My golf’s ‘bin’ quite trashy of late!
- This reminds me of my bunker play at the NSW open when leading, RUBBISH!!! (there is a story behind this that I have spent a decade trying to forget, thanks Phil Reece).
- Jeremy pushed me!!!
- Where did Murray hide that scorecard?
- The ball is right there they said. It’ll be easy to find they said. Garbage I said.
- This is what happens when you have 100 bosses, all with PhDs in turf science and golf industry management!!!
- A photo of the last GM and the current GM
- “Dam those cleaners. The Board minutes are in here somewhere!!!”
- “As your General Manager, if you have any concerns or inquiries… My lid is always open”
Thank you to everyone that entered, we had almost 90 responses which is a fantastic level of engagement from the membership.
The winner of the dinner for two and drinks at an upcoming Bettington Restaurant event is Helen Hall with the caption:
I guess this falls under “Other duties as may be required”, in my job description.
Mother’s Day Luncheon – Sunday 9th May
The Club is pleased to be able to offer our popular Mother’s Day Luncheon this year after the 2020 lunch had to be cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions.
We will once again be providing a gift for all Mum’s in attendance and entertainment for the younger kids.
This event usually books out so get in early to avoid missing out.
Complimentary Guest Vouchers for 6 & 7 Day Members
Members in the 6 and 7 day membership categories are reminded of the complimentary guest vouchers that are a part of your membership.
With the new membership having just began, all eligible members will have received their 2021-22 vouchers in the Member Account section of the website.
In the last membership year, 3,471 vouchers were issued to our 6 and 7 day members of which only 1,075 were used as of 31st March 2021.
That left over 2,000 complimentary guest rounds unused for the membership year.
To redeem a guest voucher simplify inform the Pro Shop when checking in and they will deduct a voucher instead of the $65 green fee.
For any questions, please contact Reception or the Pro Shop.
