From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 2.0mm,  Rainfall for 2021: 170mm   Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 9.5 feet

The team has been able to needle tine all the greens over the week, completing 4 or 5 greens each day before competitions and during social play in the afternoons, without too much disruption to play or our putting surfaces. The question may be asked, ‘why the need when we have greens renovations coming up at the end of this month?’ This needle tining went down to a depth of 225mm which provides an opportunity for the plants roots to grow down into the pore spaces that the tines create. This depth is twice as deep as we will be going at greens renovations and only achievable as we don’t take any material out when needle tining, as opposed to the coring we perform at renovations, where a core plug is removed from the green and replaced with sand. If we were to go any deeper at renovations, the surfaces of the greens would lift significantly and leave a very uneven surface that takes several weeks to recover. The coring of the greens is performed to remove mat and thatch material from the greens surfaces that has built up over the summer months and introduce fresh growing material to the greens sub soils.

The team has continued to work away on the bunkers at the 3rd green this week, with all three bunkers completed at this green site. The new sand that has been spread will require wheel rolling over the next few weeks before coming into play. The course team asks that members enter and exit these new bunkers at the lowest point, and not climb up the high faces when retrieving your golf ball. The new grass faces need time to establish and root down, and if members displace the turf on the faces, the establishment time is extended as the newly developed roots are simply ripped from the soil they are trying to grow into.

The thick cypress bush near the 18th green / 12th ladies’ tee has been removed this week as a safety measure after recent near miss incidents involving carts and course machinery accessing the adjacent pathway. The bush had become so thick that a blind turn had been created. The removal has opened this area up and now allows views further down the 12th hole from the clubhouse, which may also help with speed of play over time. Work still needs to be performed around the remaining Golden Robina tree, so the area will be marked GUR until these works are completed.

The synthetic tee on the 9th has been completed with the surrounds of the strip being covered with an artificial turf that blends in well with the new Zoysia turf on this tee.

Our volunteers were on course Monday morning, preparing bunkers before play, as well as preparing the next stage of bare patch repairs on holes 1, 7, 14, 16 and 18. These areas still require further preparation work before planned turfing during the green’s renovation course closure period.

Good Golfing!

The Course Team

AC Berk Cup Winner

The postponed second round of the AC Berk Cup was played on Saturday 6th March with over 200 players in the second round and over 160 players recording scores for both rounds.

The winner of the AC Berk Cup for 2021 was Tony Jackson with a 36 hole nett score of 136 on a countback from the unlucky runner up, Jake Davidson.

Well done Tony.

Husband & Wife Trophy – Sunday 28th March

The Clubs annual Husband & Wife Trophy will be held on Sunday 29th March. This event was not played in 2020 because of the Covid disruption to golf started shortly before it was scheduled.

The event is open to all Husband & Wives (including defacto relationships) and is played under a 2Ball Aggregate format meaning both scores are added to together, which should make for pleasant talk over Sunday dinner that evening.

Eligible couples wishing to play may make an advanced booking prior to the timesheet opening on Saturday 21st March at 4:30pm by emailing the Club General Manager, gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au.

US Masters Breakfast and OGC Green Jacket – Monday 12th April

After a disjointed 2020 that saw the US Masters postponed and then played in November, at a timeslot that did not allow for our popular breakfast and 18 hole stableford to proceed, we are pleased to announce that the Masters and the Club Breakfast are set to proceed as planned on Monday 12th April.

The coverage will commence in the Clubhouse from 6am, breakfast served from 7:30am and a shotgun start after the completion of the Masters final round at approximately 9:15am.

The Club runs two events over the 18 holes;

  • 18 hole single stableford
  • Two ball aggregate stableford with each player drawing a tournament player from the Masters and using their final round score to create an aggregate.

Bookings are available via the Club website or by contacting Reception or the Pro Shop.

MEMBERS AND GUESTS ARE WELCOME

Staff Profile – Karah Chapman (Bar Supervisor)

“Hi I’m Karah,

If you don’t know me by now (where have you been?) but I’m the Clubhouse Supervisor.

You may remember me as the girl with pink hair? I started back in 2018 in the bar, nowadays I spend half my time in the office ordering anything from beer to toilet paper, and the other half working behind the bar and helping to run events!

I have a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition and Food Science) and absolutely love everything about food!

Before my time at Oatlands I worked in many cafes where my passion for hospitality truly bloomed! I love baking cupcakes and birthday cakes and cooking up a storm for my family and friends!

I start my mornings with a large cappuccino and end my day with a big glass of Cab Sauv.

I’m arty farty (thanks to my Mum) and really enjoy sewing my own dresses and making all things crafty.

I love to listen to classic rock and wear clothes from all eras (especially 50s) and try to wear all the colours of the rainbow at once!

I have also recently started playing golf and I don’t know if I enjoy the game or the outfits more?’

Here are some pictures! It was a hard choice!

Two of me and one of the family!”.

Call Up on Par 3s

Members are reminded to please call up on all Par 3s to assist pace and flow on the golf course.

It is equally important for groups to be in position on the tee and ready to hit when the group in-front calls up.

Groups calling up should move to the back of the green or further to a position in which they are safe before calling up.

This is particularly important on the 12th hole given it is a starting hole and has a major impact on setting the pace of play for the day.

Thank you for your assistance,

OGC Match Committee.

Hole In One – Linda Gyzen

Ladies reigning Club Champion, Linda Gyzen, has recorded a hole in one on the 18th hole on Monday 8th March.

Not only is this hole in one memorable in of itself, the shot was captured on the Club newly installed CCTV system which also includes a camera down the 18th hole.

The video of Linda’s perfect shot can be seen below;

Well done Linda!

Ladies Volunteer Morning – Monday 29th March

Our Lady Members are encouraged to join our recently formed band of enthusiastic gardening volunteers on Monday 29th March (during course renovation closure) from 8am.

For those interested in assisting, a sign-up sheet is located in the Ladies Locker Room or you can email the Ladies Committee on ladies@oatlandsgolf.com.au

We recommend you bring your own gardening gloves, if you have them, as these can be in short supply subject to the number of volunteers who attend.

Course Care – Please Don’t Climb Up Bunker Faces

In recent months there has been a considerable amount of damage caused to the new bunkers by golfers climbing up bunker faces to get out of the bunker or retrieve golf balls from bunker that are GUR (see picture).

As mentioned in the Course Update, the new grass faces need time to establish and root down, and if members displace the turf on the faces, the establishment time is extended as the newly developed roots are simply ripped from the soil they are trying to grow into. The sand faces will also diminish at a much faster rate requiring labour intensive and costly repair on a more frequent cycle than necessary.

Please enter and exit all bunker at their lowest point and if you need to retrieve a golf ball from the face of a bunker that is GUR, please do so with your Club and without climbing the face.

There will of course be times when playing a bunker from the face is necessary however this is clearly not the case in this image due to the lack of a divot.

Club Strategic Planning – Member Workshop Group Sessions – Registration closes 15th March

Update from 12th February: Members are advised that the Workshop Group sessions being conducted will all follow the same format. Members may put down their availability for any or all dates available however, will only be allocated to one session to give the Board the opportunity to engage with as many members as possible.

In Mid 2019, the Club’s Board and Management commenced the development process of the Club’s next 5 year Strategic Plan. This process included a number of facilitated Board strategy sessions, a members survey, and the development of the 8 key Strategic Pillars that require planning and action over the 5 years of the Strategic Plan.

Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic forced the postponement of the planning process, with the previous 12 months fluctuating from great uncertainty (Clubhouse and Course closure), to increased confidence (a full membership and 50% growth in golf participation).

With 2020 behind us, the immediate future looks positive and more stable however, the shadow of Covid is still present and economics head winds are still ahead for us all.

Despite this, the Board and Management are committed to continuing the planning process to ensure the medium to long-term security of the Club.

With this in mind, the next step is to engage with our membership to ensure the Strategic Planning outcomes to date are in line with member expectation and to utilise the wisdom and experience of our membership to guide the next stages of Strategic Planning development.

Therefore, the Club will be holding a series of Member Workshop group sessions in March to engage our members in this planning process. The Workshop dates are listed below and all playing members are invited to take part (more dates can be added if required). Each Workshop session will run for approximately 90 minutes and have 12-16 members in each group.

  • Mon 22/3: 6pm – 7:30pm
  • Tues 23/3: 6pm – 7:30pm
  • Wed 24/3: 6pm – 7:30pm
  • Thurs 25/3: 6pm – 7:30pm
  • Sat 27/3: 2pm – 3:30pm
  • Sat 27/3: 5pm – 6:30pm
  • Mon 29/3: 6pm – 7:30pm
  • Tues 30/3: 6pm – 7:30pm

To register to take part in the Workshop sessions, please complete the form below.

Pennant Update

Mens Major Pennant

It was a perfect morning for golf last Sunday morning as the boys took on Cumberland away!

There was awesome golf played on a tight hard course that was set up really difficult.

The Oatlands team came away with a draw at 3.5/3.5. Which was a great result playing away from home.

Will Reece who played some amazing golf won his game to smash his opponent 6/5. Charlie Kim won on the 18th in a great game. Norm Nakhoul came away with a hard fought halve. Nathan Wareham came away with a strong win against a good player by finishing 3 birdies in a row to put away his opponent.

All the team played great and did Oatlands proud!

We are now in the regulation finals match against Glenmore Heritage Valley. This match was to be played this Sunday at Riverside Oaks but has been postponed to a future date and possible venue change as Riverside Oaks greens are in poor condition. Golf NSW made the call on Tuesday to reschedule the playoffs with a date TBC.

Thanking You,

Ken Doolan, Team Manager.
